best mic for mbox2 setup

just bought an mbox 2..i dont have any external preamps or anything....what is the best mic i could buy for the mbox 2? im recording hip/hop rap vocals only. i do not have a price limit for my mic

The mBox has fairly good preamps and phantom power build in, so you are pretty much OK to use any recording mic out there.

So search around for vocals and decide what your mic budget really is. If you were truly 'no limit' you wouldn't have gone for an Mbox.

thanks for the reply..the reason i went with the mbox 2 was because all reviews didnt say the digi 002 was ne better for rap/hip-hop..is this wrong and if so why?? thanks alot..

I haven't heard, touched, or seen in person any of these mics, I recommend these only by online reputation:

Soundelux U195

Gefell 930 is just above that budget.

AT4060 (this is a nice tube mic)

Mojave Audio MA-200 (newer mic, press may still be out on it)

Shure KSM44

But as they always say, if this mic is just for one person, you should go and try them out in person. See what sounds best for you. If you are going to have 2-100+ other people come into you studio for recording vocals, well best solution would be get them all, as mics are very personal. Your shoes might match my feet, but its only a betting game with out knowing for sure and trying them out. And if you can try them out in your recording space, all the better.

The fact that you said "I thought I would need a large diaphragm condensor for XXX music" says you dont know much. READ , STUDY, HASSLE SOME STUDIO OWNERS with requests to watch, intern, etc..., and DO SOME WORK YOURSELF, THEN COME BACK WITH Specific questions.....

Several, several people have recommended these two mics to me recently, too.......must be something to it! Who can argue with a hand-made Dave Royer mic!? Not meeee.......

Okay, why would the digi 002 be better for rap/hip-hop? Is there recording gear (not sound production gear like synths or ROMplers) that is specific for rap/hip-hop? See if you can find a kit list of what top rappers are using to record with - you might find that it's much the same equipment that pops up in any other genre.

From what I can tell the mbox 2 is a step BACK from the original mbox, as the first one had Focusrite pres and all the advertising material certainly made you aware of that. Info on the new one doesn't seem to make mention of what the pres are.

Why? You need an LDC if an LDC suits what you need. Sorry to be tautological but that is the simple fact of the matter. Dynamics might work, condensers might work, and who knows what will work for you unless you try something?

Go try something, find what you like, and then post what you are planning on getting so we can give our opinions on a specific piece of gear.

hey daniel..thanx alot buddy..sorry about the attitude..lol...ive read all the basic tutorials and there are still questions that i have...i guess im gona hit up sam ash and see what i can try out..im pretty sure the professional studio i used 2 go 2 had a large condenser that seemed 2 work good but i also have no other mic to compare it 2...def. gona try 2 experiment with some different mics...thanx again

One other mic definitely to put on your 'hit list' just to try out different categories of mics is the Shure SM7b. It's a large diaphragm dynamic that is very highly regarded.

What were the mics you used in the studio? If they worked well for you they are definitely your starting point. If they are out of your budget, try to find something comparable. The good folk here might be able to point you in the right direction if you let us know what you were using.

im waiting on a reply from my guy...hes all over the country lately..im on myspace if u wanna hear the recordings i did almost 3 years ago..check it out tell me what u think about the sound..my email is rcnlild@yahoo.com....search for me on there...also, check out "team grimey"..there on of my top 8 friends on myspace....they did all there work there....ill get back 2 u when i get a response for what mic he had..(he only had 1)
