I own a Behringer B2. It sounds good when i record people with lower (more bassy) voices. But when i sing into it it sounds really "bright." I know this mic has a presence boost feature that boosts the higher frequencies...Am i too close to it or is it just a bad mic for my voice. Can you suggest any other mics that may work better? Please help. -Tino

The MXL V67G has a good proximity effect...you might give that mic a shot.

sounds like the berryB2 is a bad match for your voice and it's emphasizing too much of something. it happens. that's why there's no such thing as "the perfect mic for everyone".

on a low budget, i'd second the V67, or you might even want to try a dynamic--the sm7 and re20 come to mind (they're a bit more pricey).

There are different schools of thought in dealing with higher pitched voices.

One theory is that you should use a brighter mic (a better quality mic with an accentuated high end) as your source is in this range and you want to put across what the source is doing.

Another theory is to go with a mic that's rolled off in the highs to combat things getting too strident.

And, still another theory is to go with as much of a neutral sounding mic as possible.

All three approaches can work with a single source. But, there are some sources for which only one approach will give you a musical result.

Even with higher and lower voices, it's really hard to tell where a particular singer's sibilance range is going to be. If your sibilant range happens to coincide where a particular mic's presence peak is, then look out. Recipe for trouble.

The B2 was the first LD mic I bought(then I found HR), the B2 never sounded good on high pitched voices to me. I think brassy or harsh is the best way to describe it. Have you tried the OMNI or FIGURE of 8 pattern to get better bass response. FIGURE of 8 pattern tends to emphasize the low frequencies more than the high frequencies. I would sell the B2 and pick up an AT4040. You can find them used on ebay for less than $200 occasionally. I found the AT4047 to be best mic for high pitched voices (so far).

What preamp are you using?

good point. i tend to look for the mic to compliment the voice--if it's a nasally and/or strident voice, i'm generally looking for a darker mic--or at least one which doesn't have bumps in the same places that the voice seems to.

sometimes, though, you want to emphasize that stridency--either b/c it fits the part or it better suits the song......but for the most part (and speaking in broad, sweeping general terms), i'm in the camp where you want to "counter" it. of course, YMMV.

I've had good luck with Oktava MK319 and AKG Solidtube om high strident voices.-Richie
