There is no best microphone (yes, call me cheesy and stuff ) , I've used many microphones over the period of time of recording, and none is the "best". It always depends on what you are recording. But, if you want a pretty good microphone for VOCALS (mainly) , try the Neumann u67 or microphones from oktavamod. MJ really mods microphones that are comparable to the u67 or u87 depending on what he wants to make the microphone sound like, for a much cheaper price.

I have several modded microphones from Michael and they really shine.
My favorite is my modded Rode NT1a and gets used for many vocal tracks.

Here are the types:
dynamic, condenser (small diaphragm and large diaphragm), ribbon.
For each, the "best" depends on your budget. For a low budget, it's the Shure SM 57 or 58 for the dynamic, the Rode NTS 5 for the small diaphragm condenser and the Samson CO3U for the large (it tested so well they had to compare it to a Neumann) and the ribbons are not part of your collection if you are asking this question. I think my amp-head speaker is broke, I put my ear to it and even had a finger in my other ear but couldn't her a thing.
Personally, my best mic is a realistic that came with a cassette deck I bought in 1973.
