I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Beyerdynamic M160 hypercardioid ribbon. Perfect mic for this situation! The great sound of a ribbon in a tight patterned and small package.

I use a Beyer M160 for our reed man (clarinet, saxophones, and flute) when we play live. It works great. For live tenor sax, the Sennheiser MD421 is kind of a standard.

temp solution

I've taken ofajen's advice and added some additional auralex panels on 3 sides and have the sm57 about a foot off the mid of the sax and an AT4040 aimed downard from a boom about 3.5" seems to work pretty on in the home studio.
The foam seems to tame some of the piercing highs I was picking up with the sm57 alone.

I'm thinking about getting one of those K&K sax mics for live stuff, has any one ever tried one with a soprano I'm concerned that it might not get a very balanced sound. But for around $200 it is a ecomical solution.
