I was just wondering what you guys think are the best lyrics. The song itself does not have to be that great, the words are what counts here. It could be highly thought provoking or so catchy that it's still stuck in your head.

Well i personally love "I want you" by Savage Garden, best lyric out there, anybody care to disagree?? ;)

Currently I believe that Ben Kwellers "In other words" has the best catch (note use of the word currently tommorow IT WILL BE DIFFERANT"

"butterflys are passive aggresive and put their problems on the shelf but they're beautiful
he'll realize the only thing thats real are the kids that kid themselves and the demise of the beautiful
what is beautiful?"

The way he sais "Butterflys is very powerful and catchy.

Also 'My Baby takes the morning train, it goes from nine to five and then, he takes another home again, to find me waiting for him."

I had that in my head all day yesterday awsome song.

RATS!! Now it's in my head all day. :o Dave

Today it's Ben Folds's "Gone"

The bit when he sais "The Chemicals are wearing off." And zac and sera I've had that in my head. actually I had it in my head when I crashed the forklift at work

"A helicopter lands on the Pan-Am roof like a dragonfly on a tomb" - Joni Mitchell (forget the song name)

Most of the Late For The Sky album by Jackson Brown

These people didn't need music - the words themselves are great poems. There are plenty more - those 2 just come to mind.

Slow down you move to fast
You've got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestone
Lookin for fun and feeling groovy.

Today I'm a Simon and Garfunkle fan.

Really hard to beat Simon and Garfunkel for lyrics--pretty much any of Simon's stuff from that era. Impossible to choose a "best" lyrics.
But how 'bout the Beatles' "In My Life" for something on the top shelf?

Right now I'm going with most of Peter Mulvey's work.

Definately gotta love Simon and Garf. esp. Sound of Silence., and the Boxer. Two of my favs, but there are so many other great ones. Bridge of Troubled Water, America, so many more - all just excellent use of words to paint a picture and a mood, but never a hint of cliche.

I was gonna say John Denver, whom I love, but after reading through a few songs, the lyrics don't neccesarily stand on their own particularly well. But his songs are a great example of overcoming the fear of exposing a little too much of your softer side. He does so really well and it works (usually).

What else...lots of beatles, of course - elanor rigby, while my guitar gently weeps.

Grateful dead has some awesome lyrics - box of rain, ripple, etc.

Apparently I'm in a hippy sappy mood today.

This is pretty good too - kind of in the same vein as John Denver...

Chorus (repeated during breakdowns):
[Ahh! Me so horny!]
[Me love you long time!]

Verse 1: Brother Marquis
Sittin' at home with my dick on hard
So I got the black book for a freak to call
Picked up the telephone, then dialed the 7 digits
Said, Yo, this Marquis, baby! Are you down with it?
I arrived at her house, knocked on the door
Not having no idea of what the night had in store
I'm like a dog in heat, a freak without warning
I have an appetite for sex, 'cause me so horny

Chorus

Verse 2: Fresh Kid Ice
Girls always ask me why I fuck so much
I say What's wrong, baby doll, with a quick nut?
'Cause you're the one, and you shouldn't be mad
I won't tell your mama if you don't tell your dad
I know he'll be disgusted when he sees your pussy busted
Won't your mama be so mad if she knew I got that ass?
I'm a freak in heat, a dog without warning
My appetite is sex, 'cause me so horny

Chorus

Verse 3: Brother Marquis
You can say I'm desperate, even call me perverted
But you say I'm a dog when I leave you fucked and deserted
I'll play with your heart just like it's a game
I'll be blowing your mind while you're blowing my brains
I'm just like that man they call Georgie Puddin' Pie
I fuck all the girls and I make 'em cry
I'm like a dog in heat, a freak without warning
I have an appetite for sex, 'cause me so horny.

Chorus

Breakdown(4x):
[Ahh! Hold on this! Oh, sock it to me!]

Chorus

Verse 4: Fresh Kid Ice
It's true, you were a virgin until you met me
I was the first to make you hot and wetty-wetty
You tell your parents that we're goin' out
Never to the movies, just straight to my house
You said it yourself, you like it like I do
Put your lips on my dick, and suck my asshole too
I'm a freak in heat, a dog without warning
My appetite is sex, 'cause me so horny

Chorus

Breakdown (repeated till end of track):
[Fuckie suckie]
[Me fuckie suckie]

One of my all-time favorite lyrics is The Last Resort by Don Henley. That and nearly anything by Emily Saliers. She's the talented half of the Indigo Girls.

Anyone familiar with David Mallett? John Denver did "The Garden Song"-- a David Mallett tune. He has lot's that are much better.

THE CURE - Lullaby Lyrics

on candystripe legs spiderman comes
softly through the shadow of the evening sun
stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
looking for the victim shivering in bed
searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
suddenly! a movement in the corner of the
room! and there is nothing i can do when i
realise with freight that the spiderman is having
me for dinner tonight

quietly he laughs and shaking his head creeps
closer now closer to the foot of the bed and
softer than shadow and quicker than flies his
arms are all around me and his tongue in my
eyes "be still be calm be quiet now my precious
boy don't struggle like that or i will only love
you more for it's much too late to get away or
turn on the light the spiderman is having you
for dinner tonight"

and i feel like i'm being eaten by a thousand
million shivering furry holes and i know that in
the morning i will wake up in the shivering cold
and the spiderman is always hungry...

Cure - Like Cockatoos Lyrics

She walked out of her house
And looked around
At all the gardens that looked
Back at her house
(Like all the faces
That quiz when you smile... )

And he was standing
At the corner
Where the road turned dark
A part of shiny wet
Like blood the rain fell
Black down on the street

And kissed his feet she fell
Her head an inch away from heaven
And her face pressed tight
And all around the night sang out
Like cockatoos

"There are a thousand things" he said
"I'll never say those things to you again"
And turning on his heel
He left a trace of bubbles
Bleeding in his stead

And in her head
A picture of a boy who left her
Lonely in the rain
(And all around the night sang out
Like cockatoos)

"Hold me Closer tiny dancer

... dont' know how the words go but yeah it sounds good :D

And Everylittle thing by the police.

More updates later. :D

Pretty much anything by William Topley. The imagery is amazing!
Yeah, you know what I'm talkin' 'bout! Tre tropical!

John Hiatt's got tons of great stuff
THe singer in Soul Asylum writes kind of in the same vein..sort of to me anyway

Mama tried to wash their faces but,
these kids, they lost their graces.
and daddy lost, at the races....
too many times.
She broke down the other day yea, ya know
Some things in life they change
and some things they stay the same.
Always time, on my mind.
Pass me by, I'll be fine.
Just give me time.

Damien Rice ~ Older Cheats
The way he sings this just hits you in the face. Worth checking out if you haven't heard him and like acoustic indie music.
