I've been a musician for quite some time, but I'm still fairly new to recording/mixing. Looking to kick it up a notch.....BAM!

I'm currently using a PC, Ableton Live (though I'm not totally thrilled with it, so I'm definatelly willing to change programs), and a Line6 toneport for recording. But now I want to switch to a Laptop.

My questions is, what would be the best laptop I could get for recording and mixing? I'm planning on spending about 1,000 on the laptop. Where should I go, what kind should I get, what things am I looking for, and what things am I NOT looking for?

Also, am I correct in staying away from Windows Vista?

Thats an older article. You should ask Craig who built the computer he actually uses. ;)

The best laptop, and the best laptop for $1000 are very different questions. Heres a list of what you want in a current laptop for audio recording.

Intel Core2Duo processor
Santa Rosa chipset if possible
7200 RPM internal hard drive(s)
2GB of DDR2 667 Memory
Built in Texas Instruments Firewire (very important as poor internal controllers lead to poor audio performance. More than likely the FW controller is sharing duty with the express port controller and other things)

Use those criteria and see what pricing shows up and pick the best you find. I would not use a laptop that did not have all of the above for pro audio recording. And yes, you will find all of the above criteria in a Mac Book Pro, for those who will want to make that point.
