I absolutely ADORE the Star Spangled Banner Sound, it makes me shiver of beauty...

btw, I'll search that song of Johnson.

SRV..Lenny..is really cool..Great strat sound!!But I gotta go with Brian May's sound on Killer Queen..

Don

why its gotta be Kevin Eubanks..... (puke!)

electric ladyland....Hendrix ....end of thread

After a great deal of personal deliberation, I think I've got a pretty good answer to this question...

"Comfortably Numb" - David Guilmore

GOD that guitar just absolutely SANG the pain in that song...

bad tone on "star spangled banner"?

wow, i thought the tone on the star spangled banner was excellent....as a matter of fact, i don't see how it could get any better.
The actual recording of jimi's woodstock set is a different story. eddie krammer himselt said that he wasn't happy with the recording of the woodstock set.

Of all the guitar tones i've ever heard, the one tone i never dreamed i would hear someone say sucked is jimi's "star spangeled banner"

damn

I thought you were talking about the woodstock version?

I've never heard the studio rendition...

I've not heard the studio version of SSB either, but Jimi's tone on the Woodstock version is terrible. In fact, I don't think I've heard a live Jimi recording I really liked his tone on.
There are just too many great tones to pick just one. By artist:

Jimi Hendrix - "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)"
Eric Clapton - "Crossroads"
EVH - "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love"
Mark Knopfler - "Sultans of Swing"
Eric Johnson - "High Landrons"
SRV - "Texas Flood"

On the other hand, tones I find annoying or passe:

George Lynch - "Mr. Scary"
Steve Vai - You name it

Oh no. . . .

I always have problems with these kinds of lists, but I'm game for at least a partial listing of some faves:

Randy Rhoads — "Over the Mountain"
David Gilmour — "Echoes" on *Live at Pompeii*
EVH — "Mean Street"
Andy Latimer — "Freefall" and just about everything else
Alex Lifeson — "2112"
Tony Macalpine and George Lynch — "Tears of Sahara"
Michael Schenker — "Cry for the Nations"

I could go on and on, but these are some that jump to mind. Woo hoo!

Michael Batio (Angelo) of Holland - Little Monsters, especially "Gotta Run."

Van Halen I

Greg Howe - Greg Howe

Pink Floyd - The Wall, especially 'Numb and Brick in the Wall Pt. II

Santana - Black Magic Woman

Metallica - The black album

Chris Poland - Return to Metropolis

There are soooo many incredible tones depending on the context of the songs...

Just about any of the tones - acoustic and electric on "Who's Next". The guitars sound HUGE, but not in that Zeppelin HUGE way. Sounds like Pete is damn near ripping the strings off with his pick. And the acoustic sounds are warm, ringing, punchy, just good times. Good times.

As for modern stuff, I've always like the stuff Dave Grohl gets on the Foo Fighters albums. In this day and age of over-process flangey guitars, it's nice to hear big amp-driven gibson guitars.

i forgot about an obscure song (probably no-one here has ever heard it). i never liked the song that much but the guitar solo is one of the most incredible guitar tones i've ever heard

uriah heap "the magicians birthday"

NUNO

I'd vote for Nuno on "Whole Harted". Beautiful 12-string sound. And of course anything from Stevie Ray Vaughn. Other suggestions: Robert Cray, Richie Sambora and R.L. Burnside.

well,
i gotta go with the more obscure less corporate-rock stuff...

1. Anything Blake Schwartzenbach plays (but "Busy" off of Jawbreaker's Unfun album is amazing)... but Jets To Brazil guitar sounds are amazing
2. Pixies (surfer rosa)
3. Misfits (that classic fuzz/buzz lo-fi off of the Static Age sessions when bobby steele was their guitarist)
4. Face to Face (off of "Disconnected" -- the original recording)
5. Rodan (you just can't go wrong with Rodan)
6. J. Robbins (formerly of Jawbox, now of Burning Airlines) - he's amazing
7. Sergie Lobkoff of Samiam... he rocks my world

that's all i can think of right now :)

Good call on Nuno's 12 string thing....but Robert Cray??!! I personally cannot stand his tone or his playing - though I did run into him once at a music store here in Seattle, and he seemed like a nice enough guy...:)

I just remembered the very best guitar tone:

MINE! :p

Through my Mesa/Boogie TriAxis. :D

Bob Mould-- has always had HUGE tone (yep, I even love the Husker Du sound). I mean HUGE HUGE HUGE tone. Check out "Reflecting Pool" on Last Dog and Pony Show, or "Gift" from File Under Easy Listening (with Sugar).
I really like Kristin Hersh's sounds-- especially her acoustics.
Robert Fripp
Daniel Lanois on "Brother LA" (For the Beauty of Wynona)
"Don't Run Wild" by the Del Fuegos. I haven't heard it in years, but I remember LOVING that opening guitar sound; really thick and chunky and smooth...kinda like a purple '80s DOD distortion pedal but nice, you know?
The Edge "Pride (In the Name of Love)"-- what a cool guitar sound...I know a lot of people claim the Edge just "chukka chukka chukka ding" with a delay-- and most of it is, but the _sound_ is so freaking unique-- I guess I am talking more about the timbre than the actual style here, though...wait, am I going in circles?
Johnny Marr as a whole
Egads, back to work...

You've got to be kidding !

Guitar sound ? Rock Guitar- Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC. No one has that crunchy overdrive sound like they do. My two bits, Silver

Wait, one more

Paul Gilbert, definately great guitar sound. Silver
