Howdy,

im looking at purchasing a firewire interface for my laptop. Im also looking at picking up a couple of mics and monitors but thats a whole new thread.

Im looking to use the setup to record drums and bass at once, and overdub rhythm guitar, lead guitar, keys and vocals. I just had a few question regarding gear.

Would you reccomend is go for a mixer and interface or a straight firewire interface with mic pres?

The ones ive checked out are the Alesis MultiMix 16, i cant seem to find much on it, the Phonic Firefly 808, also cant seem to find much and then the old firepod...

firepod!!! i've got one, and i really like it. pretty damn good onboard preamps.

Assuming you'll need more than 4 preamps for drums & bass, there's also the Motu896. More expensive than the Firepod though

looks like the firepod is the pick of the litter. another question, how does the firepod go about playback. that is, if i have tracks recorded and am over dubbing, do i need an out from my soundcard, into the firepod to hear whats already recorded? I dont know if im asking the question right, id just like to know what happens with headphones and monitors, connected to the firepod and they play thorugh the firewire connection? or i need a connection from the soundcard to the firepod bedore itll play.

also, i notice the phonic firefly one is substantially cheaper, pretty much just crappier mic pres?

thanks all

All the AD/DA conversions take place in the firepod and not your sound card. All you need is a firewire connection. The pod takes care of all your monitoring etc. It has its own ASIO drivers which are indipendent of your sound cards drivers, but if you wanted to use you sound card all you would have to do is switch drivers.

I like the Project Mix I/O if u have the money. U cant have too many ins

*the* best firewire interface would be the RME fireface, if want 'the best.'
