and waht are you gonna do with it? bass? guitar?

looks like a cheap DI to me. IMO probably just another circuit for the signal to pass through.

It will probably work. Looks almost identical to the behringer DI, which is actually a decent & cheap active direct box.

If you're recording bass, you might also want to check out the behringer V-Tone BDI-21, which is a copycat of the popular SansAmp bass driver and has a lot more tone shaping possibility.

More information about specifically what you're recording would be helpful.

mshilarious late of this board makes and sells one (the mdi) from his naiant studio store: www.naiant.com
if they're like his mics i'd imagine that they are a good value

Yes, I'll be using it on bass...I was also going to try doing a split signal with guitar. Kinda new to recording, just wanna give everything a try.

Thanks for suggestions

For an active pre, the Behringer suggestde above is fantastic for the price. I have a couple that I use for DI-ing bass and acoustic guitar - they are easy to use, and very quiet. Just one man's humble opinion...

With the budget you are working with, I would look at the Whirlwind DI boxes. This is what my band uses live. However, I personally use Radial for recording which is out of your budget.

berry di is good?! ok, if you're serious i'll try one. but i'll go local...just in case i have to bring it back, you know...

i have one of those behringers and its help up nice. its actually constructed well which i didnt expect. but it does the job.

Right now you can get an ART Tube mp studio for 29.99 (the deal is on the front page). It doubles as a DI box and is supposed to be decent.

*edit: at musiciansfriend.com, hehe

John, do you already have a DI? The berhi DI-100 is utilitarian - it is cheap, fairly rugged, and works fine for impedance matching, etc. Nothing particularly amazing, but for $35, it's a decent box.

The sansamp copy has a number of tone controls and is actually pretty cool for getting some different bass sounds. I don't have a sansamp to directly compare it, but I think this box gives me a few options to add to the very good bass sound I get from the GT Brick. For $30, it's a steal, imo.

i have plenty of cheap preamps that i like for bass, but what i really want is a decent splitter so i can amp and mic to one channel and di the other thru a pre to another.

so i can mix the 2 or decide on one but have both incase i wanna fill in the clean direct with some dirt.

Since your budget has gone up:

Whirlwind Director. You see these everywhere. Good, solid, clean sound, one of the standard DI's that you can't really go wrong with.

Radial Engineering DI's are very good and you are seeing them all over the place now too. The one that is closest to your price range is called the "Radial ProDI".

In general, avoid the budget stuff like Behringer, Samsom, Nady, etc. You'll be surprised at what an effect a DI has on your tone, so this is not one area that you want to cheap out in.

One of the best bass DI's I've ever heard is the Groove Tubes DITTO. Great stuff, but out of your price range (and now discontinued). Still, if you find one for a good price used it would be worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice, Albert. After reading your post I looked into it a bit and decided to with the Radial Pro DI. A little more than I was originally looking to spend, but I think it should be worth it.

I understood that the DITTO was discontinued because the Brick replaced it... That the brick circuitry was identical on the line input side as the Ditto... Can anyone say for sure?

So I got the Radial ProDI. Is there supposed to be a drastic drop in volume when I use it? I checked, the pad is not on. It does make my sound a little more "clear", but i seem to lose a little bit of bass and power. Not a drastic reduction in noise either, since I have to turn up the volume so much when I use it.

Thoughts?

a mic selector, that could be nice live....

well, i looked under my keyboard, and i found that my bass amp has a di out...so, i'm done. :) i can now mic my amp and go direct ATST.
