What amount of money? What use? Active or Passive? Including preamp or not?

Random Thoughts:

Under $50: Behringer DI-100 or their SansAmp knockoff

Under $200: Radial or Countryman

Under $500: GT Brick, Avalon U5

Does the head already have a line out (not a speaker out, but a line out)? If so, you may not need a direct box. Also, I would recommend against solely recording directly from the head, especially for any type of distorted sound, as it will sound totally crappy. The amp/speaker interaction is very important to the overall sound. Now, if you're miking the cabinet and recording a direct line for possible reamping, that's ok.

If you must record direct, for noise or other reasons, just get a POD/vAMP type contraption. It won't sound as good as the real thing, but it will give you a lot of options for sounds.

Good point.

Also, DO NOT run the amp's speaker connection to the DI box.

Word. Unless, of course, you like seeing stuff blow up.

Well I have the same question. My head has a direct out, and mostly due to the distance from my gear, id like to convert it to a balanced signal. Any suggestions on a cheap/simple DI box that doesnt suck? Im considering countryman but wouldnt mind something cheaper. This isnt as much for recording as it is for capturing song ideas, but I would like to be able to capture a direct guitar track along with a miced when recording, as well as maybe use it for keyboards and stuff.

I have an Avalon U5. I'm not impressed by it. Maybe I need to try a few differant sources but honestly, i don't see what all the fuss is about,

I have no experience with the products.

That's a great basis for a recommendation, I have to admit. The only better basis would be from someone who has ACTUALLY USED ONE.

I've used other Naiant products and am acquainted with the engineering team and I have the utmost confidence that the products are excellent.
