Ok, I may get flamed for being such a cheapskate, but my wife won't let me buy any more expensive recording gear for awhile...

I know that there are a few cheapies out there, but aside from the Alesis 3630 which SUCKS, any other suggestions?

The Fmr. Audio RNC is generally regarded by pros and amateurs as the
best all round compressor for about $175.00 (I have one too).
You can get a double (2 year) warranty if you order from www.mercenary.com
It's also a stereo compressor BTW.

In order to flatter a recording source and especially for vocals, however,
my preference is to use a Joe Meek compressor like the MQ3 on up-they
run about $200.

A good way to go is to get the RNC (clean) and the Meek (color) eventually!

Chris

P.S. Get the "other one" next time she buys shoes! (a fellow husband)

Yeah, what he said!

Yeah if you cant find a dbx 163 for under 300.00 used the RNC:D

Judging by the pictures, it looks like the RNC is a single compressor, thus can't do stereo or at least have independent channel separation. Do you have to buy two units?

RNC Stereo

It does stereo, but not dual mono.

Lest I appear to be opaque or overtly disingenuous, what I means is: it has two separate channels, but only one "detector." It will apply the same gain reduction to both channels at the same time. This is a good and desirable thing when you're using it for "stereo" program material (like what's going from a mixer to a stereo deck when you mix down ... or even what's coming from two mics in a stereo array), but not so good on two separate, different mono things (like, say, a vocal track and a bass track).

my vote is for joe meek.

these fmr compressors haven't caught on that well in the UK. ive hardly seen any studios with them.

joe meek do some great compressors if you like the sound.

awesome, in my opinion.

Episode II revelations?

Guess I'll better stay quiet about Yoda then... ;)
Although the words "Kung-Fu" and "Jedi-can-o'-whoopass" come to mind... :D

absolutely.

i find my self using a Roland SRV3030 quite a lot, and even over a lexicon. it's just got this "sound" kinda thing. there's a patch called lively room which is just awesome sounding. i think there's also some QC difference between the countries. i hear about so many people moaning about behringers breaking down and 3630's popping and whatever....there's none of that over here in the UK! i have hardly heard about behringers breaking down, and the 3630 is an extreemly popular unit over here! hardly anyone has heard of the FMR here.
