Using a beta98 I can make people throw up from the low end on a floor tom. :D

have you ever put a beta98 on a 18" floor tom??? I didnt say or maybe i didnt, but they arent lacking low end, but for my 18" dw floor tom, i like a md421 or a TLM103 more!

Cool. Do you clip those onto the rim, or a lug? :p

I have probably put beta 98's on 300 or more 18" floor toms and never had a problem with getting enough low end. I always get more low end off of it than I do a 604 or a 421. I would imagine a TLM103 would give plenty as well. I am not saying that the beta98 is the "best mic ever" or even that it is really better than any of the others. I was merely pointing out that there is no lack of low end when using a beta98 like someone above mentioned.

I just bought a 5 piece Samson QT mic set. They are clip on. The only draw back is that the clips only fit standerd size hardware. :(

i am the #1 supporter of beta98's!!! I cant piclk up that pair right now because my recording computer blew, and i need to buy a new one, but i LOVE those mics. IMO, "I" was not as happy with the sound on 16 and 18" floor toms, and i am more happy with md421's, but they still sounded great! I just like the md421's on the floor toms more. I AM NOT dissing the beta98's one bit! I LOVE THEM, but only like them on MY floor toms, IM not in love with them on my floor toms, but I LOVE THEM on my rack toms!

Thanks DuoTone and all for your remarks.. I still am leaning towards the 98s. Maybe them and the Sennheisers would be a nice place to start off..

hey DuoTone .. I just checked out your myspace.com stuff and your songs .. pretty neat stuff.. my band is also into the freaky prog/math stuff. I know this is a little off - topic .. but check out some of our unique stylings .. I am a flash developer and have been working on our site a bit here and there .. check it out (still under development .. but there are some mp3 files to
check out) ..

nice playing on those mp3's. Where was this all recorded? Pretty good stuff, all of our stuff on that myspace is UBER old, but w.e. On that cut of "Metallica Joke", I was on bass because my bassist wanted to play drums. How old are you and ur bandmates? were are you all located?

anyone use atm25's on big toms? In the studio i record at, they have atm25's but i have always gona with my beta52 on the kick and then just the c414 overheads and room mics. Should i use those on the toms next time i go in?

I too am surprised at the lack of mention of the Audix D series. Nice and small...BIG sound...I use D2's on the smaller toms and D4's on the larger. The D6 is a go to kik mic as well as really big floor toms. They're crisp, clean, and can take a huge amount of abuse by inaccurate drummers. The ATM25 is a GREAT mic for most drum and bass cabinet stuff. While I do love the MD421 mic for everything, the Audix D2 has a touch more bottom and will sustain its clarity in a bit larger spl numbers.I like the Beta52 also. Its a great sounding mic as is the D112 and the old D10 still rocks hard.Theres not a better snare mic than the Beyer 201.And its rejection and null is quite prominant.Live we use the D2's on the snare.Very snappy and full.

I didn't mention the Audix mics because the only mic I like at all in the D series is the D6. I don't mind the D4's on smaller toms though. But to use it as a kick mic, which is what Audix intended, seems just silly to me. I have yet to find a use for an Audix D2 that an sm57 wouldn't sound better on.
