I recently purchased a Fostex MR-8 digital 8-track unit, and am running the signal into the N-Tracks program on my computer via USB cable. At the moment, I'm recording with Shure SM-58 and SM-57 mics.

I've just ordered a Behringer UB1002 mixer, primarily to set sound levels, use the mic pre-amps, and provide phantom power prior to running into the MR-8.

I'm considering buying another mic for recording acoustic guitar. With this set-up, I'm thinking of the MXL 603s small condenser, the MXL V93M large condenser, or the MXL V67G large condenser. Frankly, after reading various reviews of the various mics, I'm confused.

Could anyone offer advice on this choice? Again, I'm looking for the best budget mic for recording acoustic guitar on the MR-8.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

I guess we can all say that it primarily depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. Are you unsatisfied with what the Shure mics do for you? Because in my opinion, the SM-57 does it for me and is probably the best budget mic out there. Of the mics you had listed, there really hasn't been any bad reviews that I've come across so far. But like I said, it all depends on what type of sound you are looking to bring out. The MXL V67G is a really good mic. For $99 bucks, you can't go wrong. However, I think you can't beat a better deal than the Marshall MXL2003. It is a large capsule condenser mic for about $150 bucks that is "intended" for the acoustic guitar. Try checking it out. It also comes with a shock mount. Let us know the results!

Me too. I think a lot of it is just subjective. There are so many condensers right around $100. I did read that the V67G was designed primarily for vocals.

V67 on acoustic, not that good. I love it for vocals, but it makes both of my acoustics sound harsh. If you are interested in using a LDC (large diagragm condenser), a lot of people seem to like the Studio Projects B1.
However, on this BBS, most of the knowledgeable engineers recommend either the MXL603 or the Oktavia MC012 small diaphragm condenser mics for acoustic instruments.

I really appreciate the information folks have posted. I've decided to buy the MXL V93M large condenser mic from Musician's Friend.

The specs for the V93M and the MXL V67G are identical and, after listening to the sound clips of both on the Listening Sessions - great site, by the way - I like the sound of the V93M better. In addition, the shockmount is included in the price.

This forum is the best source of recording information that I've found, with very helpful members.

Thanks again!
