Best Bass Plugin?

Hey,

As you may know, I'm trying to set up a little home studio. I plan on making metal and rock. I play the electric guitar and have no problem recording that. I need to be able to record bass but I don't really think I should buy a bass guitar and amp with no knowledge of basses (I also don't really have the money, I'm 13). So, I thought why not just use MIDI. I looked around and am not sure what bass plugin I should get. Trilogy looks cool but it's pretty expensive.

Any suggestions? Should I go for the real bass and amp or go electronically.

I have considered getting a cheap $100 bass and one of the SansAmp Bass Driver DI but that ends up being the same price as Trilogy except that I would know how to use trilogy unlike a bass.

well

Well its really up to you do you want the versitilty of using something like trilogy or do you want the punch that that natural bass adds in there. Just because I'm not a big fan of midi prog. bass I would go with the bass and di. Also if you can play guitar you already have a head start on the bass because you know where root notes and all that are so you would just need to learn a bit of technique.

I am a multi-instrumentalist, primarily keys I guess, but I play a lot of different things. Playing an actual bass provides its own unique thrills, and my life is enriched because I have access to one.

Besides that, listen to your favorite recordings. Some of that metal has bassists that sound like they're TRYING to sound like a keyboard, maybe it's the producer's fault mixed with the fact that it's such a precision genre sometimes. But then there are the bands with real musicians on the bass, and he (or she) is able to impart so much expression though his fingers.

Decide which style you prefer, and which you're going for. I don't think I've ever heard anyone who learned a musical instrument say "Well shit, that was a complete waste!" Then again, I don't hang out with a lot of oboists.

get a real bass, it's not that hard to play, unless you want to play extensive crazy intense fast basslines, it won't take long at all to learn. If you've played guitar for a while you can pick up basic bass playing easily.

Yeah, I like the idea of being able to play the bass. I saw some video's on how to play and it doesn't seem to bad.

Do I need any other speacial equipment if I'm using that DI box with a bass guitar? I heard that you can easily blow out your speakers with a bass.

haha yeah i've destroyed one of my piece of crap amps. Just be careful and don't go to loud. Where headphones, or whatever. I got my bass for $50! I plug it straight into my mixer. Sometimes I try using my di box (which I don't know how to use very well) ... or I use guitar port!

cheers

I do have a lexicon alpha osio driver. Could I just go direct with that? But don't you need to add distortion to a bass. I really have no clue on what effects are used for bass, if any.

Oh and another thing, what guitar? Without any research, how does this look (it's the cheapest Ibanez). I know Ibanez is a good brand.

what do you mean lexicon alpha asio driver ( or whatever its called) do you mean can you plug a bass right into a computer? I wouldn't recommend it, but you probably can. My bass is a "GK" or something; def. not a well known brand. I don't really care.

btw if your trying to link me to a picture of the ibanez bass it's not showing up.

Well, it's a USB interface that has an instrument input and 2 stereo inputs. It's pretty much a external soundcard.

Ok, I'll try it out once I get a bass. What about distortion for it? Do I need it?

Ain't nothing like the real thing. That should be your first choice. That being said, the Yellow Tools Independence Free VST has an incredibly realistic bass sample set including a bunch of slides and automatically triggered fret noise. The app also has amp/cab/mic modeling and a slew of effects. A very good Mexican acoustic bass is also included. Best of all its absolutely free. Here are some samples of it in action from my website www.FrugalGuitarist.com. All drums and bass were programmed using it.

Wow, that's sounds good. I'll try that first and see how I like it. If not, I'll go with the real thing which is what I will probably do anyway.

what do you mean, do i need distortion? if you want distortion than load some distortion on! It's all about what you want. :) generally, a lot of people put a clean bass through, but theres nothing wrong with trying something new, or mixing things up!

Alright. As you can see, I have no clue about bass (except I saw a YouTube video on the basics).

I probably can learn just through youtube and I belive my guitar teacher used to paly bass, maybe I'll ask him a few questions.

In the long run, a real bass will sound the best. However, in a pinch Independence Free works like a charm. I use it for a bunch of the clips over at FrugalGuitarist.com.

Best Bass Plug In?
Plug In a Bass! Seriously!

Get the Behringer BDI21 - super cheap, quite robust & almost as good as the sansamp - for a TINY price.
Oh, bass is a bit like piano - easy to play - not so easy to play WELL but you can get useful results if you have a sense of rhythm and some dexterity (a good reach helps too!).

Ain't nothing like the real thing.

Couldn't agree more. On a low budget you can get a nice sounding bass and amp. The first bass i bought was a second hand rockbass corvette (warrick copy). You can get them for a decent price and they sound meaty as fuck!! lol Plus, to learn on is brill. Plays beautifully! And about the amp.... as said above (i tihnk) behringer is probs the right way to go.

Hope i've helped a little.
