I just need one for home recording. The bass sims in my vs-840ex suck. Don't need anything fancy, just a decent sound.

I bought a Squier Affinity P-Bass for 159 from musicians friend and as far as I can tell, it's a good one for the money: it stays in tune, it sounds like a bass.

I now will patiently wait to see how long it takes before someone tells you to spend more than 200 bucks and get a 'good' one.

and how are those Squire strats for $99...so I can stick a Roland Gk2A pickup on it???....or just a waste of a C note? I would have to order one. No one I know stocks such superior equipment.

Raven makes a nice 5-string for about $260 street - I bet their 4-string is even less...

Had to resist the urge to tell you "spend more than 200 bucks and get a 'good' one."
Your best be is not to look for a "brand-name" bass but rather go to a music store or a pawn shop where they have some used ones and mess around with them.
A guitar-geek friend of mine really likes the Squire P bass he has. You might get "just a decent sound" from a squire, that is the pickups maybe good for your needs but overall playability might not be so hot. Expect to get what you pay for. I bought a cheap bass for $50 bucks, it played fine for a while and I didn't feel so bad setting it on fire and smashing it in my back yard when I was done with it.

I have one of these (as well as a mex Jazz bass that I got as a gift) and it is a pretty decent bass. Nice and punchy but not a ton of low end.

The big loss at that price point is that the pickups are usually noisey and the wood that the instrument is made out of is not the best quality (that's why you don't usually see natural finishes for under $400 generally).

So buy a cheap P style bass that has a neck that feels comfy and stays in tune, and upgrade to a nice EMG pickup. OR.... cruise the pawn shops!

BTW, Gidge, I was at Mars and the Yamaha Pacifica's are on sale! ( all green ones anyway) and I thought of you.....

that Tanslucent Green is a COOL ass color...when i ordered mine they were out and i dint want to wait.....

so are they worth the $199?

Sorry to get off the point but Gidge, how are the pickups on those?
