There is a search function at the top which will likely reveal a wealth of opinions. Here are a few thoughts:

Single channel:
Groove Tubes Brick
Old School Audio MP 1-A
Grace 101
M-Audio Tampa

Dual Channel:
FMR Audio Really Nice Pre

I'll include under $500 used as well as new...

I like the Grace 101. It puts a big image in the monitors. It takes real and makes it more real. I like that sort of thing but you might not like real.

I like the FMR RNP. It's two channels. It's got a light color to it that some compare to older, classic RCA preamps.

I like the Safe Sound P1. It's one channel but you get a great channel with it of expander, compressor and limiter. It's the ultimate home recordist's channel when you figure in bang for the buck. It's on the clean end of things.

I'll also throw in a shout for the Presonus Eureka.

For a two channel, add a Rane DMS 22, or a pair of Rane MS1b.

why does the tampa sound good?

Its a very clean pre with an awesome compressor. I bought a second one just for an compressor.

Which one for acoustic guitar?

Any comments on a pre for the combo of VF80 and MXL 603s mics (pair)?
Thanks
