Best 16 Channel Mixer? What To Buy?

Im looking to buy a 16 channel mixer as a gift for a friend. Does anyone have the top 10 list or if you could let me know what brand / board is the best to buy.

The best one is the one you can get for whatever amount of money you are wanting to spend.

There are $300 mixers, $1000 mixers, $3000 mixers, and $30,000 mixers.

Midas Venice 160. The Soundcraft GB-4 looks nice too, but I have not heard one of them. I am impressed my the small Midas though.

You can look at the Allen and Heath GL series mixers, too...I'm not sure if they make a 16 channel, or is 24 is the smallest. Ive used the ML series and like those alot, but theyre much more $.

if youre looking for something nice but not too expensive, the yamaha mg 16/4 is really nice. i own it and i wouldn't trade it for anything...and least not anything under 500 dollars. right now it sells for 270.

It depends on what they would be using it for. A mixer for a recording studio is different than a mixer for live sound, etc.

I have and LOVE my Mackie Onyx 1640. 16 channels of good clean preamps, good EQ, etc. It also has a slot for a firewire interface that rocks if you are wanting to record a live performance onto a laptop while mixing FOH and monitors.

For pure sound quality, Midas hands down. At the bottom of your budget, Allen Heath Mix Wiz, or Mackie Onyx.

Just remember with the Onyx you can't use it's EQ during tracking. Not a problem for most of us but some have a problem with that.

Actually, you can use the EQ during tracking, but you can't use the EQ if you track with the FW. I know it's splitting hairs since most of us use it with FW, but just for clarity's sake.

I have an Allen and Heath GL2400 and sounds great. It has no returns though so you have to use a channel for that. You can get a 24 channel version for $2000. The direct outs are pre-EQ if that's an issue.

Soundcraft makes really good stuff too.

I've not used Midas, but virtually any A+H is going to be very good (Mix Wizard version three is a cut above the first two) and then Soundcraft's M12 heads up the budget <£500 range.
