About the hardware stuff...I have XP running beautifully on both my main machine (Athlon XP 2400+) and on my secondary (AMD K6-2 450 mhz). I can record on both (I use fast hard drives in both machines, and the only difference that I have noted is that my main machine handles effects much faster, as well as editing (Basically any processor intensive function). But the 450 still does everything I need at an acceptable speed. I don't see what the crazy man is talking about with his allusions to assembler language and old hardware, but the fact is that XP runs great on both new and old systems and it is certainly faster and better and more stable than 98 ever ran for me.
