anyone know if this is a good mic? the ratings at Musicians Friend say it's a good mic for the price, but i don't know if i'm gonna buy one. any ideas?

IMHO it is one of the best deals around for stage vocal mics. At the price you cannot go wrong.

Buy one then compare it to any similar mic below $100 (£100) with your eyes closed and be prepared to be surprised.

I have a friend that uses 4 in a local club for Karaoke and PA work and in 18 months they have never let her down ( nor the berry mixer).

I have it, but don't use it much anymore since I got my studioprojects B1. The XM8500 sounded quite nice though on my voice singing rock music (for being a 20$ mic that is). It does not handle high spl very well, so it was pretty useless on my trumpet.

If I were to do it all over again I'd get myself a SM57 instead of the XM8500.

I bought one of these to use with the vocoder on my microKorg. At $20. I was very surprised at how well it appears to be made. Because of the use I've put it to I can't give you a sense of sound quality under normal conditions...

I've got one

I've had the XM8500 for about a year. I have done some recording wiht it as well as live performance.

I also just borrowed my bass players SM57 and ran some comparison tests. I had noticed that micing my guitar cab with the XM8500 it seemed a bit airy as if something was missing. A recording with the SM57 brought back the natural sound of the Cabinet.

As for vocals, I noticed the same "airyness" with the XM8500.

I also tested both mics for feedback problems. Using the same preamp setting I plugged in each mic and tested for feedback. I have found the XM8500 to be prone to feedback. The SM57 is much less suseptable to feedback.

The XM8500 has been a good mic for me, but I always knew I was going to buy a better one. As compared wiht the industries favortite SM57 I'm tempted to get the SM57, or steal if from the bass player!!

you can hear some recording of vocals using the XM8500 on my crappy webpage cc.usu.edu/~davbradshaw

If you had the gain controls the same then the berry would feed back first because it has a much higher output than the SM57/58. In our tests it resists feedback at least as well.
