Yeah, just mic up 2 guitars, have 3 singers and record it all (mixed using the desk to the right levels) onto my computer via the line-in?

How does only having 2 pre-amps figure into it?

It's all relative to how you have it hooked up, and what program you are using to record it. Guitars with amps? Acoustic guitars? What program are you using to record it?

Ok, well;

1.
5 Mic's plugged into the desk using XLR cables.
Hooked up -> via ouput of desk -> analogue cable -> to line-in on my soundcard.

2. Program used -> Cooledit / Adobe Audition,

3. Acoustic guitars; no amps.

How does that figure?

Why not just do them one at time? That way you can mix and stuff after the fact, instead of getting the levels just right, using the trial and error method?

I'm asking is it possible? So I could get a 'live' recording?
No layering intended :)

You'll most likely have to spend some time with everyone there and record a few trial runs to get the levels just right. Not sure how only having two pres is going to work for you, but if it's what you want to do, that shouldn't stop you. If they are electric/acoustic you can always try plugging them directly in to the board. Not ideal, but you can get some pretty nice sounds that way too.

Here's the simple answer -

You will only be able to use two microphones at once since the board only has two microphone preamps.

If you are using the stock soundcard on your PC, you will only be able to record two tracks at once.

Solution if you need to record more tracks at once - Get more preamps (or a board with more preamps) and an Audio Interface with more inputs to your PC.

I highly recommend buying a good book on homerecording. Check out your local bookstore and pick something up. It will give you lots of good info on the basics.

Good luck!
