I am trying to record many channels onto my PC so that each channel through my mixer comes up as one file on the computer in my program. Does anyone know how many different channels I could output to my computer with the Behringer SL2442, or do you have any suggestions on a mixer that can record each channel separately? What exactly do I need in a mixer in order to do this?

What program are you using and what audio card do you have? You say many channels...how many is that exactly?

If you're wanting to record simultaneous multiple tracks to your pc, you'll need a multi-input audio card. The mixer in it's self isn't needed for this unless you're planning to use the built in mic-pre's.

The idea of the mixer is to blend multiple tracks together then send them off to your recording device or other effects n stuff. The built in mic pre's are simply an added bonus but, we're still talking about behringer stuff. Not to knock the product all together but, if you don't really need the mixer and effects, eq, pan and faders, you're spending a lot of money on a low end set of mic pre's. If there is a channel insert for every mic input on the mixer, you could run the channel inserts to your audio card and do it that way but this again really negates the need for the mixer.

Depending on what you're doing the mixer, it might be nice for out of the PC work and/or monitoring. Not trying to shut down the mixing board idea...I've got a couple here too but they're mostly used for monitoring during rehersals or tracking.

Tell us a little more what you're hoping to accomplish.

The SL2442 has 16 channel inserts, so you could use those to send signals to your soundcard. But you will need a multi-input soundcard to record seperate simultaneous tracks. The more inputs on the card, though, the more expensive it will be. A mixer can be and is used in other ways than what punkin described, so don't discount it.

I personally use two Layla 24/96 cards. That gives me a total of 16 analog inputs.

Boy,...sure hope I didn't send the message to "discount" the mixer. My intent was to find out more what the Lad was trying to accomplish. If he's on a budget and doesn't quite yet know what he needs, the mixer might be over kill and miss the mark all together. Especially if he's wanting to multi-track live or mix in the PC. I thought I mentioned too that depending upon his intent, the mixer might be exactly what he needed.

"Other" uses would be for live sound set ups. I've got a couple myself (not behringers) but, once in a while they come in handy. There...not discounted.

Just being a little snooty not pissed. ;)

True, it would be good to know just what he wants all those inputs for. If it's nothing but line level signals, then he wouldn't necessarily need a mixer.

Sorry if I misinterpreted your post, punkin.

Right now I am using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I have an Audiophile 2496 sound card so I only have two ins right now. I am using a Yamaha EMX5000-20 powered mixer because I need it for live sound. Do I not need a mixer at all to record? I want to record drums with multiple mics, two guitars, bass, and vocals. Do you have suggestions on a setup or equipment? The mixer I have only has left and right rca record outputs, so I can only record to two different channels on my PC. Thank you for the help.

With only two inputs on the audio card, you'll need a mixer to record that many sources simultaneously. The other option is to record each track seperately. But you're still going to run into a problem with the drum set if you use more than two mics.

With your current set up and limitations, the Mixer seems the best way to go.

powered mixers are not the best for recording. made for live pa work.
ideally you need a affordable recording mixer or a rack of standalone preamps going to a multiple input sound card like a 1010.
first thing you need to do is tell us how many mics you weant to record to seperate tracks on the pc. for drums if you record right try 2 overhd plus one on the kik.
i dont know (forgotten) if cake 9 will let you record multiple tracks at once.
so check this. also you need a powerfull pc for this. so list your pc confign in detail. for multiple input recording you can try the demo of what i use , powertracks from pgmusic.com. 49 bucks for 48 tracks.
if you have more Q's just ask.
peace.
