Is this mixer any good at all I know its a cheap mixer I just need it to record 2 tracks just my keyboard and a mic thats about it. I dont want to go out and buy the expensive ones since Im not recording all kinds of tracks also is the mic preamp on this any good or should I just go ahead and buy a mic preamp?

I love my 602a... fit my needs in organizing my connections and headphone monitoring....

but since I have the VC3Q, I don't use the mic pre anymore.... :)

If you are only EVER going to need 2 tracks (I realize you did not write that that was the case, but hypothetically) it may be cheaper to just get a couple of standalone mic preamps. Just an idea.

Leeking,

Not to cut a post but, I've a 602a (with no complaints outside my ignorance) going into my soundblaster soundcard with Vegas as software and I've yet to find a way to isolate the level of the headphones on the track I'm recording from the level of said track.
Is it not that easy with the 602a? How do I set this bugger of a chain up?
I'm oh so hoping this question will be pertinant to FiVels general querry as I don't like stealing.

Its cool theron we can share :) but is it better to get a mic pre amp then this mixer? dont the mixer come with a pre amp and is it any good? can I run the keyboard through a regular preamp like say an audio buddy? I guess its the fact that I would like to turn the knobs on the mixer but if I can get myself a regular mic pre amp and just use an eq plugins that would be ok whats your thoughts people? Help this newbie out.

Thank You

I've had an 802A for a year-and-a-half. Works great; have had no problems. You really can't go wrong in getting one.

For your keyboard you might want to also get a cheap DI box so you can plug the keyboard into the balanced XLR input instead of the 1/4"... I found my keyboard sounded better with a DI going into the mixer.

If you want to go the small mixer or,"cheap mixer" route, the 602a is the top I've come across in the price range. For the specific use you are asking about as far as keyboard sound, that lends to subjectivity.

How is that for a bullshit post.

I'm thinking about getting a 802 for screwing around at the house. (The band has recording gear but it's at the keyboard guy's place.) Everyone tells me this stuff is dead quiet and very good at any price. The mic pres are supposed to be very decent too. If you have 2 or 3 pieces of gear to plug-in with I would suggest getting a mixer instead of a mic pre just because you can plug everything into it's own channel and forget about it instead of constantly plugging and unplugging things. I've got a ART Tube MP mic pre and I have to say that it doesn't sound any better to me than any decent board myself or band have ever owned. I'd definately go with a mixer.

The 602 only has one effects send BTW and it's about $80. For $100 you can get the 802 (on sale at Mars) and have a bunch more channels plus 2 effects sends.

theron,

sounds to me like you're recording from the Control Room output of the mixer right? if that the case, your recorded track volume will be effected if you turn the phone volume knob, right? :)

I guess you should try recording from the master output, or for my case, I send the channel I wanna record throught AUX-send, so I only record that channel while have the rest as the "rhythm" music.

in this way, your phone knob won't affect the volume of your recorded track.

hope this is clear... :)

802A!!!

windowman is right. If u wanna get the 602a just spend the extra buck and get the 802a. it is worth it. I read somewere that if you get a mixer never get just enough always get more than you think you will need. I got a 802a and it is great.
