Behringer ECM-8000

I have two of these, and they're pertty cool as cheap overheads from what I can dissemble.

Should I get rid of them and put the money towards some MXL-603's? Everyone talks so highly of the 603's, and I'd love to have a pair.

I'm just wondering if I have something worth keeping with the ECM-8000's...?

id keep them......

thats not saying i wouldnt eventually get 603's....youll get 2 different sounds as they are two different sounding mics......

Keep 'em. The Behringers are 1/4 inch capsule designs, and the MXLs are 3/4 inch capsule designs. One of the big differences is in transient response. The smaller the capsule the faster and more accurate the transient response is likely to be. You'll hear that difference for instance when you record accustic guitar. The larger diaphragm will sound more charming, the smaller diaphragm will usually produce a signal that doesn't sound as impressive when you listen to it by itself but sits very well in the mix.
 
I often use one ECM8000 and one Oktava MC012 (a lot like a 603) to record acoustic guitar. The 012 adds a certain color to the sound, and mixing in a little of the 8000 restores some accuracy to the mix. You won't get that much for them anyway, why not hang on to them? Here's a revolutionary idea- you could even use them for...measurement mics!-Richie
 
You could maybe sell the pair for $40, which would leave you $30 shy of just one 603 :)

Keep the ECM8000's...the more mic's the merrier!

I use both the ECMs and the MXLs. For overheads, I use the ECMs if the room sounds good. If the room sucks, I use the MXLs. I like using one of each on acoustics. The MXL on the neck, and the ECM on the lower bout or over the shoulder.

Keep the ECMs and buy the MXLs.

That's the exact configuration I often use on acoustic.
 
NO DON'T

The emc's have an omni pickup pattern where the 603's are cardioid
Very handy to have around
 
Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't you use the Behringers to callibrate your monitors for a flatter frequency response? i read about this some where so I'm interested in getting me one or two.

Yes. The ECM 8000 is exactly 7.5 inches long. If you have two of them you have 15" - which makes them almost the right length for finding studs in your wall.
 
Well, LD, you know I'm big on finding uses for things that weren't intended, I think I'll use that. The only problem is, they're 7 5/8". Usually I find the concept of "studs" associated with the overestimation of the length of things. Oh well.-Richie
 
Aren't most stud walls made 16 inches on center. So the mics being 7 and 5/8 is better! 7.5 wouldn't have gotten you to the center of your stud.

If nothing wlse you can take the foam out of the cases and put tapes in them!! $40 Is kind of expensive for a tape case though.
