Anyone got this mic? It is a cheap Chinese or Japanese mic

I'm wondering how well it would perform in recording acoustic guitars. Does it require a power supply? I guess it does

Get the CAD M179. There's a thread below this one on how to get them for $129.00 Its a great mic and much better then the Behringer

That's interesting. There aren't any M179's anywhere for that price. In fact, I don't see it anywhere for under $200.

And the Behringer C1 isn't even on the market yet, so I don't understand how you can compare it to any other microphone. You must have a pipeline to the future.

Yeah, the net company who sells the Behringer C1 contacted me and said that they wont be available until late May. I'm in Australia. But it is so cheap at $80 Aus including postage that I thought why not.

But then I suppose I will need to buy a Phantom source for it. I don't mind though. It's only money and it's my hobby

Yeah but you might not like the mic at all and you could've put that $80 towards a mic that you do like.

I'm not trying to put you off the Behringer as such but it's always a good idea to try mics out before you buy. You could spend $800 on a mic and it might not be what you're looking for.

Exactly. I am so bad at making good decisions. I'm just not very well informed on these matters....but I am getting better.

The way I see it, this is so cheap, and it's a condenser. If it does what I want and I am blown away, then so be it.

I need to win the lotto to get all that good stuff. I feel so guilty about spending money on music. I don't know why. I should just find out what's good and jump right in

In my experience cheap gear falls in to 3 categories.

There are a few things which are just crap. Even a beginner to recording audio would observe that it doesn't sound very nice or that it doesn't add anything pleasant to the sound etc.

Then there's stuff that'll blow you away at first because it's the first experience you've had with that type of gear- in this case a condensor mic. But after a while you realise it's actually not that great and it downright sucks compared to other similar pieces in the price range.

Then there's stuff which although not top quality, you will usually find a use for regardless of how much experience you gain and no matter to what level of quality you upgrade.

It's wise to try and be as sure as possible that you're buying gear that falls into the latter category. The resale value of gear that falls into categories 1 and 2 is not usually good. Probably not great for gear in category 3 either but hey, who cares? You shouldn't need to sell it!

Yeah, true. It's also all about being able to make informed decisions...gathering information.

Anyway, I am looking forward to hearing how this cheap condenser will sound for recording acoustic guitar.

thanks

The Studio Projects B1 and the MXL 603s both work well, IMO, for acoustic guitar recording - and the B1 can double as a decent vocal mic on some voices.

B1 is US $99 new, about the same price as a 603s.

Yeah, that sounds about right doesn't it? We pay roughly $2 for every $1 you guys pay....so that's about right.

Thats why you try and buy from the states. Thats what i do!

I got 2 second-hand mic's (excellent condition) B1 and a MXL603S for $230 AUD shipped! I am extremely happy with that purchase... extremely. I dunno... what do you reckon?

I bought a CAD m179 condesnser mic for 300...haven't tried it yet.

I also go the mic200 preamp/phantom power supply

I think they will go all right

One place is selling them for $109.00. All of the information is in that thread

I got my cad m179 for 340 Australian dollars. The C1 I mentioned isn't actually out yet here in Australia, but it will be in May

I have a question about connection to soundcard...

Going in via "line in" is correct right?

I have an xlr from my preapmp, converted to 1/8 going into soundcard...trouble is that I notice my recorded sound is all on the left track in Guitar Tracks Pro2. Even though I specify stereo.

Is the "line in" only for mono?

Usually I would use the "mic" jack, with my 1/8 adapter and I record in stereo in GTP2...now using the "line in" I am only getting Left channel.

Also...when I go to record a 2nd track over my 1st track as an overdub, I can hear what my mic is picking up as I play the 2nd part. I am used to not hearing this when I record. Can I turn it off so that I only ever hear the 1st track through headphones?

Right, but neither of those places has the M179 in stock or even listed on their websites anymore. They give no indication that they will be restocking this item. I haven't called to find out, but it seems to have been some sort of blowout sale. Everyone else is still listing them for $199.
