Greetings. I have a Behringer C-3, plugged into a PS400, plugged into the mic input of my computer. Why can't I hear anything?

Nothing happens when I speak into it and try to record with Audacity. It's set as the default device in the Sound>Recording dialogue box for Windows Vista.

As you can probably tell I'm completely new to this.

Crazily all I had to do was close the Sound dialogue box and the error went away in Audacity.

But now the mic's recording really, really quiet. As in, I speak into it and have to turn the computer volume to 100 to be able to faintly hear my voice. What's up with that?

Welcome to the forum first off.
The behringer C3 is a condensor mic isnt it?
Are you trying to plug it into the computers onboard sound card input without using an audio interface?

What exactly is a PS400
I hope its not a play station.

edit
i got it.

this will power the mic but wont do anything else like amplify the mics volume enough to get it to the level you want for or decode it from analogue to digital.
Both of these tasks are performed by an audio interface nowadays.
I suggest you read the stickys at the top of the mic page about interfaces and mixers and spend some time reading and come back with some more questions.
Most of us have been somewhere in the parish of where you are and you are in the right place to learn more and save your self from wasting money on things you dont need.
Happy reading

I couldn't find what I was looking for in the stickies, most of it is dated 2003. Can you just recommend me a cheap as possible interface please so I can up and running?

Hey man.
You could get a used Tascam us 122 for next to nothing on the bay.
That'd do the job nicely.

Just have a google to make sure there are drivers for your platform.
