(hope no one minds - too much - that i'm doubling this up from the newbies forum; if so, i apologize.)

hi. new to all this digital recording (as evidenced by posting in the newbies forum - but i think i'll double this up in the computer recording forum, since i don't know how many people check all the forums) and i need a bit of help.

okay, the SETUP, as it says in the subject, is a behringer ada8000 converter running an optical line into an event ez-8 pci card, recording into adobe audition. win xp pro. latest ez-8 drivers.

PROBLEM: how do i get/record eight separate, distinct tracks?

last night was the first time i got everything all hooked up and gave it a shot. currently i've got four xlr mic lines in the ada8000. the ez-8 is spec'ed as the recording device in audition but that's it - i don't have, like, ez-8 1, ez-8 2, ez-8 3, et cetera (which, from reading the thin, sparse hardware manuals and going thru audition help, i'm lead to believe might be the needed case).

i AM able to record but all four lines are mixing together into one. so, i set four tracks to record and i get four tracks of all four lines mixed together.

in the (not-very-helpful) ez-8 'manual,' on page 10, i see a screenshot of a gui for ez-8 asio driver. the driver/software from event for win xp doesn't seem to have this. it was a little utility to quick change some settings but nothing about # of tracks. i tried installing the software that came w/ the card, per the manual, but errors occured (i ASS-U-ME the included software isn't for xp).

SO... is that sufficient info to help me? if not, i'm happy to give more, as needed.

thanks to anyone w/ any helpful info and/or advice. it'll be much appreciated.

did i pose a really hard question or did i, somehow, offend everyone?

:D

in another installment of me typing to myself... ;)

while i'm not 100% certain, further delving has given me the impression that audtion is not asio compatible - correct? - and, while i still don't know the exact definitions of wdm and asio, i'm gathering that asio is capable of differentiating multitrack input and wdm is NOT.

i wonders if THIS - http://michael.tippach.bei.t-online.de/asio4all/intro.html - might help. i shall see.

add -

i guess that doesn't make any sense... the ez-8 has asio drivers; audition doesn't support asio... end of story (unless they upgrade that).

*SIGH*

"Currently, Audition supports MME, WDM & Direct X, but not ASIO drivers. So for the time being, I can only record and play back through my motherboard’s built in audio hardware (nVidia chipset). I suspect that Adobe will be quick to address this issue with a patch, since ASIO has become the standard driver for most pro-level audio hardware."

and so ends my monologue. :)

Sorry man. We are not ignoring you. It’s just that, we don’t know.

Did the EZ8 only come with one driver? Try to use the others if it did. But beware, they may cause crashing problems. You can uninstall drivers from within the Windows “Device Manager.” Then reboot to install another one.

Perhaps you can get a refund for Audition if you haven’t had it long. There are tons of other multitrack softwares that does support ASIO drivers. SAWStudio supports ASIO and only sells for a little over $200 or so. Or, return the sound card and get a lightpipe interface that does not use ASIO.

Anyway, good luck with it. We feel your pain, man. We’ve all had our share of problems too. This whole industry is experiencing growing pains.

that's cool, rd... i got it figured out. at least i'm a quick study.

audition doesn't support asio and the wdm driver for the ez-8 doesn't support multitrack. so, should anyone else be experiencing a similar issue w/ audition... there ya go.

solutions:

1. use sw that supports asio.

2. use a soundcard that has multitrack-capable wdm drivers, if using audition.

jump over to adobe's audition forum and audiomastersforum.org and post up in the audition wish list that you want audition to support asio.

Is the EZ-8 a USB 1.1 device?

Perhaps you are confusing the EZ-8 PCI interface card with the EZ BUS control surface. I understood nme666 to say that he had the PCI card, which is not a USB device.

The EZ-8 plugs into an expansion slot on your computer and provides an ADAT interface to connect other equipment. ADAT, sometimes called lightpipe, is an optical cable (TOSLINK) connection that can carry 8 channels of 44.1/48khz audio simultaneously in one direction or 4 channels of 88.2/96khz audio in one direction.

He made the right choice of interface; he just didn’t know that he would have compatibility problems.

YUP.

and, now i got cakewalk sonar 3.1 producer edition and it gives me an ez-8 error when opening. says there's either a driver error or the inputs are being used by another application. nothing is open that, to my knowledge, would be using the ez-8. but sonar DOES, at least, see the multiple tracks (1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8) and that's a start.

sonar allows me to disable the inputs or ignore. i ignore and i can assign them to tracks but there's no incoming signal (of course [i guess]).

i uninstalled the ez-8 and reinstalled the winxp drivers, just to make sure, and i get the same.

*BIG F*CKING SIGH.* ;)

anyone..? bueller..? bueller..?
