Hey all,

I recently finished my best mix so far (not saying much, but I'm still learning)

This was done with:
a takamine acoustic with a PUP going into my POD 2.0
plus micing the acoustic from in front and behind.
Then I recorded the vocals with my best mic (sm57) and ambient recording in my sound booth (bathroom)

Anyways, I did the mixing with headphones on my laptop, so I'm still learning how to mix the EQ properly, and could sure use your help.

btw: I did buy a pop filter the next day <grin>

Thanks in advance.
Erik

Good Voice

The recording was a little rough cause the guitar trk was so riddled with bad chord changes and sounded VERY week.
I mean, the guitar recording was alright, the PLAYING was week and in some parts, just wrong.
So, Pro....Good Vocal
Con....Need a more better executed guit trk.

KEEP AT IT............thats the secret, just lots of hard work!

Nice to meet you.

Dan

Nice voice.... but you need to work on the guitar chops - rhythm, timing, chording...

Then worry about recording skills...!

And yeah... keep at it!!!!!!!

I'd echo the other's comments.

I really like your voice, it sounds nice. It'd be nice to hear what you sound like doing the harmonies. That song has such nice harmony parts.

The acoustic guit didn't seem to have a bad sound, I just don't think it was mic'ed all that well. <edit> I guess you can tell how carefully I read your original post :)

Sounds good man, but the guitar is way to quiet. You did the vocals great.

Yeah ... nice vocal. Confidence without aloofness ...
Yer got skoolin' n' stuff don't cha ?

awwww, would you really love 'em all ;-)

Yeah, some of the older guys on this board are going to be totally intolerant of messing up any of these guitar notes or chords.

ESPECIALLY when they are struggling to enjoy this nice vocal, and that's the issue here.

Just re-track the guitars, and use only one guitar, you wuz too amskabiscious ! Concentrate on one guitar track at first, and add the rest very slowly over a couse of weeks if necessary.

Backup the vocal track NOW.

Thanks for sharing !

You know, lol...after reading the above comments, I half expected this to sound like you were playing the guitar with your feet. I get away with worse live, lol :D :D - Of course, this ISN'T live, so clear that crap up in the future, okay?

Yeah, nice voice. I can definitely hear the bathroom, but honestly, it doesn't bug me...I guess that's why they make "bathroom" reverbs, eh?

Dude, I don't know how old you are, but you SOUND like you're starting your recording endeavors at a much younger age than I did, so I'm thinking there are going to be some truly great tracks coming out of your living quarters (house/dorm room/apartment/back in a house after the apartment years). I'm also thinking that I'm gonna' try and dispense some advice that may bore the crap out of you right now, but I swear, you'll eventually discover it; just trying to save you some time and some re-tracking: See, your voice will disguise a multitude of sins, lol, but when you hear the timing off on a guitar part...fix it right then...and don't fix it by sliding stuff around if you can avoid it...fix it by playing it again on the spot...not because I'm some kind of a purist (far from it), but b/c it's uncanny how quickly your own ears will block out little flaws in your own tracks once you've listened a few times...so the best thing to do, when you hear a clam on playback, is to do it again if physically possible. It sounds to me like you can actually play, you just rushed it.

Bah..., you're probably off rollerblading or something.

-The (feeling older) Fart.

I don't know squat about what you should do with your guitar, but the recording sounds clean to me, and...

Your voice is beautiful. I particularly love the way you drop, or let go of, your phrases...the quality in your timbre there is one that makes me want to listen repeatedly to you sing. Very nice.

I bet you may not be as young as some might think either, but I could be totally wrong on this. Hell, Chris' daughter is what, 13, and she sounds way beyond her years.

Thanks for sharing this,
Kirstin

We don't have a lot of women posting here, but they can all sing very well (Kgirl72, Jaimee and now we've got Senorklein to add to our list)

Cool.

I heard the timing issues in the guitar, but I was too impressed by your vocals to notice. :)

Keep posting. We need more women.

Good start!

I echo the sentiments of the folks who've already posted but I want to start by saying: man, are you in the right place! Lots of friendly and experienced advice here so take ye heed, my brother and go forth with confidence!! (Can I get an AMEN?)

Your voice is really nice - too nice to be singing in the bathroom (I can't get that image out of my head) but I know it's a highly recommended trick of the trade. (Just kidding there). Seriously you have a very nice singing voice that needs some good guitar accompaniment so stop reading this and go practice.

The recording was very good considering you're in the first steps in your pursuit of recording prowess. The guitar sounded natural and full-bodied - great accomplishment when you mix with headphones.

Keep on keepin' on - and keep posting. Great stuff is coming - I can tell. Have a ball! Thanks for the tune!!

can't add anything new, but I agree with the previous comments.. very nice vocal, bad guitar.. a harmony would have been cool..

Wow

Thanks for all your comments.
I really appreciate them!

Most of the timing issues seem to be because each track was recorded by seperately and I didn't use a click track. (Newbie error.) I'm going to go back and re-record the guitar tracks myself and see if I can make it better.

The reason the vocals are so good, is because they are done by my wife, who is an EXCELLENT singer.

She did all the guitar tracks as well
(3, 1 solo, 1 strum, 1 finger pick)

I agree that I need to recut some of the guitar work.

Btw: I'm 28, I don't know what that means in terms of age of starting. All I know is I have a ton of learning to go, and this board has been sooo helpful.

Thanks again for the comments.
