I recently purchased a used Washburn electric 6-string and a new Indiana acoustic/electric 6-string. What I want to know is: to what notes am I supposed to tune the strings? (I have a keyboard that I can tune them to.) Please answer listing the strings in order from the top (thickest) string to the bottom (thinnest) string.

For reference, I received my electric roughly tuned to:
E, G, D, F#, A, C#
with each note being higher than its predecessor. Is that the standard tuning?

Also, do acoustic and electric guitars tune to the same notes for their respective strings or are their tunings supposed to be different? (I just received my acoustic today and it seems to be tuned to different notes than my electric -- I'm not looking for alternate tunings.)

Any expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Daryle

E, A, D, G, B and E. Acoustic and electric guitars are in the same tuning.

Standard tuning for electric and acoustic guitars is the same.

e
B
G
D
A
E

Where "e" is the little E string.

The tuning on the electric (when you got it) would most likely work for playing slide, but is far from a standard guitar tuning of E,A,D,G,B,E low to high, the B being just below middle C. Lots of people use alternate tunings and it sounds like your electric was tuned by one of them. Good luck learning, take a few lessons, experiment, have patience and most of all have fun.
