I've been recording and mixing for quite a while using my guitar, bass and PODxt, but I've never added vocals. So now I'm looking at recording some vocals, and also possibly some classical or acoustic guitar. I'm not going to be using it live, only for recording.

I've been considering getting an SM58 because that's what everyone seems to be recommending.

I'm just wondering if I will need one of those pop stoppers (I have no idea what they're called)

And can someone recommend something better in the same kind of price range?

Thanks!

Teaboy,
The Shure SM-57's and SM-58's are workhorses that should be a fine starting point for recording.

Nowadays, you could get an entry-level condenser (Audio Technica AT-2020, AKG Perception 120, Sterling ST-51) for the same price. Those will give you much more detail for your recordings, but will also need a source of power, which means also purchasing a pre-amp. An entry-level preamp, such as an ART TubeMP, will add about $30 to your tab.

I'm using a M-Audio FireWire solo which has an XLR socket with a Phantom Power switch, so that means I wouldn't need a preamp right?

And how about a popper stopper thing?

Ya

Perfect then grab the condenser.
Pop filter, you will need it if you buy the condenser, you can make one of these but you can buy them for about ten bucks.
If you still plan on buying the 58 you wont need one.
