What sort of musical background do you have? Already playing synths/keyboards, percussion, or other?

I always think that the best way to start is to get a stand alone recorder like a tascam DP24 2488 or something like it, takes the learning curve out of computer recording and lets you get on with the recording process and learning multi tracking the easy way.

Read the sticky threads in this section of the forum - computer recording, etc.

Recording for Dummies is a good book to start out with. Gives you a really good run down on all that is involved with making music with a computer.

'recording for the small studio' is a great book so is 'mixing secrets for the small studio' both amazing, but can get quite technical, I like them a lot.

A really good book was written recently by one of our long time members here. I read and reviewed it (highly). In addition to eberything you need to know to get started (in written form with many pictures), there are also audio clips so you can hear what is being described. Failrly inexpensive and available at Amazon, it is called "Record at Home on a Budget" by Chad Johnson.

I would recommend this to a beginner through intermediate.
