beginner bass question

What would be a good bass for a beginner? I eventually want to use it to record live bass on hip-hop/r&b tracks because I'm a fan of the live sound. What would be a good model to begin with that can also be beneficial to what I'm trying to do once I learn to play? My price ceiling is around $600. What is good for a beginner but has quality sound and playabilty at the same time?

There are a lot of choices available to you. I would scout around at some guitar shops, not for prices but for instruments that you think best suit your needs, then search the net for the best price for that instrument. You might even be lucky enough to find a good deal at a dealership.

For hip hop, you'd probably want something with active pickups and a low b string.

im thinking a 5 string with actives. schecter makes very very nice bass's with actives, ive played a 4 string from them that makes your ears melt. they usually have two emg's soapbars.

but id would say what they have said.

That Shecter 5 is a really nice bass.
I suggest also, to go to several full line dealers and hold, feel, and play several model basses. Each one will have subtle or distinct differences and will feeel quite different in your hands. All our hands are different too, so that makes shopping a critical issue. The neck thickness and width, body balance, weight, and tones can be distinctly different among models from the same manufacturer.
I played only Fenders for a good while. I was waiting on a salesman in a store once and picked up an Ibanez copy and played it for a bout an hr. For a decade afterwards I didnt play anything but Ibanez. The next decade was a mix of Ibanez and Washburn. I`ll probably go back to Fender this coming yr, I have a bad case of the "comin home Jones" and I think a new Fender V will sate it well.
