That chorus is so good it just KILLS!!!
As usual, at least from what I've heard of you it is obviously YOU.
You are not trying to emulate any artist (that I know of anyway).

You'll let me know if you get to Victoria again.
I will drive down to have a look at the face in front of that mind:)

Pretty introspective piece here. Sounds good. The vocal to me sounds like it could be blended a little better...it comes in kind of strong on my cheap speakers.

Very cool stuff you are doing in the chorus...I like those sliding vocals. Very "bee" like.

Very electronica sounding...maybe could use a bit of percussion or something just to give it a little bit of kick -- imho --

Sounds good overall. The tune itself is very cool...kind of Brian Wilson like in the vocal structure.

it's interesting that all your song titles seem to emulate fragment sentences..if that makes any sense.

you seem to like these "heart beat" kinda drum feels. ...and the synth is the blood flowing thru the veins, the various areas to the different body parts.

Vocals are really loud in this one. Too much I think. The strings are a little on the 'cheezy' side for me too.

you're really 'whacked out' musically, and I can only say it could only come from California!! What were you like in the 60's?

The vocal harmonies have a Beatles feel to it...in certain areas.

I think you're due to invest in yourself and get a NICE DAW keyboard.

Very creative singing.

Nice wiggly notes at the end.

using your keyboard reverb too?
 
My one complaint might be that the background vox might be able to be blended a little better - the sound gets a little muddy when they come in - not *bad*, just could be smoother I think. Maybe cut a little low end from the bg voices?

Also, there's very slight timing "clams" at :53 and 1:07 - again, I'm *trying* to find problems here, so I can have something to say other than "I love it!"

Because I do love it. Great stuff. And I don't think the vox are too loud - but then I never do.

great chorus.. I thought of the Beatles immediately.. this is pretty dark for you.. unlike your other happy songs, this one gave me more of an insanity vibe.. could be my favorite of yours.. I didn't agree with some of the drum choices like the one during the chorus.. it has a clippish sound to it that I thought was clipping at first.. the vocals come in pretty loud but it's hard to say how this is supposed to sound.. what are you using for synths and guitar chains? Pretty freakin' cool!

Nice Paul. Very very nice. A good weekend for music around here.

That "clipping sound" is getting to me. That may be because of the crackling issues in my own recent mix and the subsequent neurosis. But really, when it comes down to it, it's trivial.

This is probably my favorite from you. Sounds like you got right inside it. I love that. I'll be listening to more of this one too, for lyrics, but the imagery in the music stands on its own.

I'll add more if I think of anything important. Very very nice.
 
boydrj - thanks - okay, the vocals need adjustment - I've never worked with so many voices before, and it's new ground for me.

Thanks for your impressions. (Oh - in the 60s, I was listening to all the most interesting music I could get my hands on. There was a lot of it around then. LOL)

chris - yeah, I used a 6 dB shelf on the lower end of the vocals, but there are so many of them, that I guess that doesn't cut it. I'll try a highpass with a real steep curve instead.

Sam - yeah, the drums. I wondered about that, thought maybe because the level was low and the mix was busy, it might pass muster, but both you and Tom clocked it. I'll try an alternate. Thanks for the loan of your ears. :) It isn't a synth, btw, just some of the potted sounds that came with version 3 of Fruity Loops. Guitar's through a Pod - Tube Amp setting, I think.

Tom - glad you like it (see comment to Sam about drums, above). I listened to 'Fold' through my monitors a couple times yesterday, after I posted in your thread, and I couldn't hear anything to comment on soundwise - really good. It's like what Groucho says about *trying* to find something wrong with it, and then after a minute or two I go: "Aw, c'mon, if it's *that* hard to picknit..."
 
I don't know what to make of it, but I like it I think. Very good harmonies. Don't know what to compare it to... Joy Division? The sounds are very 80s analog, Roland strings? A less talented person couldn't have pulled it off, would have sounded silly. Maybe some reverb on the vocal, but maybe not. Very original.

I do agree on the clipping issue, and Groucho's comments regarding the harmonies.

But as for the rest: phew, woohoo and yay! :)



O, and there seems to be something wrong with the word....errr....no, let's not go there. LOL :D (sorry Tom, I guess I was looking for something 'wrong' in your song too)

I don't know the verse needs something, it gets a little repetitive. Sounds like weak Chinese music on an old Casio keyboard.

The harmonies are really cool and nice though, I love the chorus.

Pedullist - I've changed the toms and now it doesn't clip - it's very useful when lots of people mention the same thing. :) Bump, indeed.

Exactly. And what is the singer singing about? Something a little weak, repetitive and old, right? It fits the song. But I don't want to start defending the music - it reminds me a bit of Electric Cafe Penguin Orchestra music, in fact - okay in small doses. A year and a half ago, I started experimenting with Fruity Loops as backing for songs. The upside is the change of sound from guitar and bass. The downside is the mechanicality of the sound. I've got some stuff that I've done completely in Fruity, and it seems to work less well than the stuff that's a mix of Fruity and real instrument playing. I still haven't learned how to freak the beats so that it sounds less like a clock. Anybody?

...very cool stuff. I cant equate this with anything in my music collection ...so finding a reference is tough. ...I guess thats what strikes me as particularly cool. Nice vocals in this. I really dig the way the bg's move in and out. At first the lead vocs struck me as too up front, but i think that is again due to being unfamiliar to where this is coming from. After a few listens, I dont think so anymore. The loud vocs give it a narrative feeling that seems to work well. ...love the guitar in this too. ...I liked this alot... very nice!

dobro - It may fit and it's definitely original but I think you hear me though, it needs *something* in the verse. It just doesn't make me want to listen again (although I am right now :)). Just my opinion.

Too bad, because there's something really addictive about the chorus.
 
This might be my favorite of yours. You've tried some new things...nicely. Agreed on the drums in the chorus. The rest is very sweet. The panned interplay is nice in headphones. A better string patch would have been very nice (or real strings ;) ) The vocs come in a little loud but they sound very nice. The chorus layering is very cool.

How frightening is that... it's like the "You've got Mail" noise on Beelzebub's PC :eek:

It builds very nicely... a little lip-smacky... but not annoyingly so...

A very "Morrissey-like" delivery, here. Nice harmonies. Drunk-e-fying :eek: :( When all the voices come together, it's like the pink elephant's on parade in "Dumbo" ... you expect the voices to be comforting, but they're very uneasy. Warm, but frightening.

Listen #2: Damn... if that opening noise were all one heard in a room... a dark room... coming from a computer... how many of us would wish we wore diapers right then???

Actually feels inspiring.... Paul (was it?) This is the type of thing you hear and then push yourself to create something that stretches the mind a similar distance... hopefully in one's own direction.
