I'm surprised you have a PCI graphics card - are you sure it's not AGP?

sorry, i think you are right ... its agp ... its a radeon 7000 for if that matters (w/ 64mb - but then again, i have been wrong before :-)...

my system is about 18-24 months old ... would it still be a good idea to pull the graphic card? :D  ???

manning: I downloaded the powertracks, but havent installed it so far ... if it helps me cure the problem, i'd stay happily with it ...

I will keep you informed...

thx!
alfred

pd: the little that i know and based on past experience, i would also advice to steer clear of usb cards.

alfred - some tips - after installing powertracks MAKE SURE
up in the menus you do the test of powertracks telling you how many tracks you can do.
also before recording test tracks remember up in the menus you have to
as in any recording program - tell powertracks wich device drivers to use.
you will see them listed in the dialogue. also read the help file.
also on the left of each track under ty - you CLICK and tell powertracks whether you want to record a midi track, a mono audio track, or a stereo track. if you have any issues the other powertracks users on the pg forum are extremely knowledgeable and will help you get set right as i will try as well. this is a very deep capable multitracker. so read the help carefully.
its v simple to use.

Alfred - don't worry about your graphics card, if it's AGP it's not interfering with your PCI bus anyway (as far as I understand!!!).

Manning - I totally agree! A clever manufacturer could bung a MB with decent AD converters in a rackmount case and shift them as music PCs, you would always be able to upgrade CPU, RAM etc, and have the benefit of a low noise floor straight off without ever worrying about compatibility etc! WOW!:)

well noisedude ive been pushing a few vendors to do this.
i think we need more musicians asking for this.
i did hear a rumour - dont know if its true that the on board sound spec
is gonna be updated. would be nice if pc's came with nice sound on board.
do what i do. bug the mbd vendors about this.
peace bro.

Interesting update:

I just installed Cubase 1.0.5 (not the latest version) ... and guess what ... it runs flawlessly, I even could defrag. my audio drive (!) while playing back ...

cpu usage didnt go above 25% (as opposed to the 90+% in cool edit pro) ...

the only explanation I have could be the ASIO drivers that came with cubase ... would that make sense?

thx
alfred

Yes, possibly! Hmmm!

yes alfred. i think the cubase programmers were smart including their own asio driver. glad you got your system running ok.
a bit of history about how asio came about as i understand it.
in earlier windows versions using the windows programmers api , a programmer had to go thru an extra layer and win communicated with the sound card. the negative of this was that this took a finite number of milliseconds. hence in earlier versions of win latency could be a real problem due to the time it took win to communicate with the sound card.
thenn with asio i think this addressed the sound card directly thus reducing the latency times. MS gradually became i guess aware of the problem
hence you will now hear MS's solution - a new driver model called WDM.
so now musicians have another driver model option to choose from.
however NOW with the newer athlon, p4 processors and faster hard drive
the whole problem disappears assuming one has ones pc set up properly.
within a couple of years ive a feeling asio will probably disappear as being needed and probably MS will update its driver wdm model again probably.
just guessing - but within two years all the latency issues will probably have all but disappeared due to how fast the pc becomes and MS's own driver models.
hope i explained all this right.
hope you make great music.

thx folks for hanging in there with me so long ...

not only did i get the damn beige box to work - i also learnt a lot !!!

thx for sharing
alfred

pd: we have a long weekend here and I also took an extra off - so i hope i can post something in a couple of days

cheers,
alfred
