OK, so I finally decided to learn how to put on new heads and tune them properly. Even though I've played for about 4 years, drums were never my main thing so I never bothered to learn. So, I read the drum tuning bible and applied that technique and it really made my drums sound better. But here's the problem (I have 70's Slingerland kit BTW) - I inspected the bearing edges on my drums just like he said. My snare is metal and looked fine, so thats not an issue. My toms are 3-ply (maple/poplar/mahogany I think) and the bearing edges are far from uniform - they vary in width from about 1mm to 3mm and there is some uneveness (there are gaps when laid on a flat surface). So, even though my toms sound better now following his advice, when they are tuned properly to provide a nice resonance, there is also some distortion present. I can get rid of the distortion by tuning higher, but then the drum sounds choked.
So, I think I need to have the edges re-cut. Does anyone know anything about this? Cost? Can I do it myself? If so, what do I need?
Thanks.
