This is what you've done
Greetings,
I'm listening to the song a few times, so I can talk about it while its fresh. My opinions:
You can sing man, you got a good voice, and nice control (i'm jealous), and the best thing is that you know how to you use. You don't try to sound unnatural, you stay in your range. A simple well don't melody is much better then a complicated off key song.
My fav band is Metallica, I tried to sing like James Hetfield once, it sounded horrible and my throat hurt- thus, do what you do well.
My personal taste is the guitars a little louder. I know soft stuff usually centers on the vocals and words more then instruments, but for male voices, I think it balances better when you hear the strumming around the voice. Its a good mix though, so everything else is just opinion.
on the strumming at 1:00, where it stops and you do a beat on the guitar. I don't like it. The idea is cool, but the "thump" is too soft and not "thick" enough to work out I think. Because your trying to use it a psuedo percussion thingy, and especially when its just silence behind it (no drums), it kinda ends up empty sounding I think. You do it again at around 2:30, but it seems to work much better, I think the first one is mono (panned) and the second time its two guitars (stereo) so that tends to make it more audible.
I REALLY do not like the solo notes panned. Can't stand it. There is nothin else going on (vocals) so why pan them so hard? And then not let them ring a bit? The solo sounds so limited, like someone gave you 4 notes to use and you had to be carefull not to waste them. Also, the reverb on the vocals are good, warm but not noticable, the guitars sound a little bit thin I think compared to the vocals, especially the solo notes, is there any reverb at all on the solo guitar? Doesn't sound like it. You could also try not panning the strumming guitars 100 L/R, so there is just a BIT of an overlap (but not too much else it gets muddy unless they are perfect takes).
The distant vocals at the end are a good way to finish.
I really thing the guitar "thumps" are weak, it makes me notice the silence instead of flowing like ther rest of the song. At 0:55 the stereo thumps are actually a bit off, then it switches to mono thumps. Can you overdub a guitar thump?? never tried it.
So my positives on the mix summed up are;
1. Good reverb levels on vocals
2. Decent use of 2 strummin guitars
My negatives
1. I think the vocals are just a TAD to loud (like .1 decibal)
2. The guitars sound a bit thin, especially the solo notes
3. Hate the panning of the solo notes
3. Do not like the "thumps" becaus they are quiet and not "full"
But definately, all in all, a very nice track. You remind me that I should stop reading about mainframe computer parts and just make music already.
