From what I understand, Gershwin's "style" came from learning to play on a player piano.

He started the piano roll, and learned to put his hands on the keys as they played the roll.

Now, if you've ever seen a player piano in action, you know they are like rudimentary MIDI--- meaning that roll could be punched to do things no human player could ever hope to accomplish.

Like play in wierd times, or even play three-handed parts at once.

I don't know if it's fact or legend.

About right/left- handed.

I'm a lefty that plays left.

And I have a lot more dexterity for some things in my right hand than I do in my left. I think it comes from learning chording and fingering on the guitar.

Like operating keys. You know, house keys, car keys. Or screwing a nut onto a bolt. I invariably hold the bolt with my left hand and turn the nut on with my right. Trying it the opposite way is always awkward.

I play fingerstyle with a flatpick, and have pretty solid rhythm chops, if I say so myself.:D I think that's from being left-handed and using my left for the pick. Or maybe it's from jacking off. Lots of practive with THAT!:D

Something else. I don't get it how people can play guitar and TALK at the same time. I can play and SING. But don't ask me a question, because I'll have to stop playing in order to answer.

I think it's a right-brain/left brain thing.

Or I'm just too un-coordinated to do two things at once.;)

LOL! Me too. :D Or I wait forty seconds and then answer only to find the person who asked the question forgot what they had asked!

As for Gershwin, that's just info I got from my jazz prof in college. he might have been blowing smoke because he knew my special situation but it does undoubtedly affect a player's approach...

and, of course, it would stand to reason that you'd be an excellent rhythm player if you're lefty and play lefty! that was the point. I probably built chords in my left hand a lot faster at first, tho...
