what is the best way to get a real low-end,punchy bass sound that will cut trough in loud music?

Use a compressor and also EQ to seperate the Kick Drum from the Bass.

do you have any compresser/eq settings that you could show me?

i'll also add that you should find out where the mid mudd is and scoop it out. don't totally eliminate it because it does contribute to the sound, but don't let it compete with the other instruments in your song.

its my belief that the depth and the punch come from different frequency octaves. the depth comes from the low-end stuff (60hz-240hz) and the punch comes from the upper mids and highs (800hz and up) where you get fret noise and such.

the 240hz and the 800hz above are rough estimates. I know that i'm getting better at getting good bass, but i can't yet explain exactly where the mud starts and stops.

I think your problem is the other instruments covering the bass. Use a eq to get rid of all the low end noise that results as an effect of mic promiximty in guitars and what not, you feel the bass a lot easier this way. I use a low end shelf starting at about 250 hz, this usually opens up the entire low end for me, and I end up actually lowering the bass.
