Bass Drum Stuffing - Yes / No? - With what - Why???

For me,it depends on what style of music Im doing and the tempo. Rock (usually faster), I like a piece of styrofoam cushion to lay at the bottom, touching the beater head to get a good thump without a lot of boom and ring. For a slower jazz tune , I take it out for a boomier sound (if thats what I want). For recording, I leave the front head off, most of the time.
 
Well I play various types of rock so I'll use the stuffing method. But eyah, different types of music, need different setups. I guess thats how I can pout it.
 
All the rock and metal I do, I do it without any muffling and a hole in the front head. Tuning is a big part of this.
 
Yeah, it is. I guess its preference once again. ANd different types of tuning. You have no hole you said? And it sounds nice? That must be good tuning too.

I do have a hole. almost always.
 
So, do you think I should try the hole or the pillow/blanket thing first (I'm thinking the Evans pillow first since the hole is perminent and the pillow is removable ;) )

what'd ya think??

If you are doing anything other than jazz or big band, you will need a hole in the head to get the sound and the mic position. When you see rock and metal bands on tour without holes in the front head, they are either triggering the kick or they have the May system and the mic is permenently mounted inside.

You can do both the pillow and the hole.

.......so how's a 5" hole off center sound?? (I've heard that you don't want it in the middle of the head....too much beater sound???)

I guess... Mines on the side down low corner. Maybe you should do that.
 
Man! I'm really diggin' that snare and kick sounds you've got!........uh, how'd you record those two?? (Mic's?, placement, eq'ing??)

How is that snare "tuned" -- ?? I like the deeper type smack vs. our drummers pickalo crack your head off type of sound :rolleyes: :D

PS - I'll probably go ahead and cut a 5" hole this week some time when I get a chance (Oh yeah, how was the kick tuned as well??)
 
The RD1 samples feature a Ludwig 14x6.5 chrome over maple snare with a kevlar head tuned medium high. A 57 on the top and side (pointed at the vent hole) The kick is a 24x14 Ludwig with a D112 inside the drum about 2 inches from the batter head pointing about half way between the center and the shell.

The RD2 samples feature a 14x6.5 Pearl free floater with an Evans Genera HD Dry head tuned medium high. It has a 57 top and bottom and an XY overhead pair. The kick is a Tama Artstar 24x18 with a Beta 52 just inside the hole.

Cool!

Since I've got a Beta 58 (and Beta 57) along with some sm57's, I'll give that a try...

I ran out of cash before I could get a true kick mic :(
