Bass cabs and tone...your thoughts?

So I've got the GK Goldline head (500 watt, lower end head) and the MBX 4X10 cab (400 watt). I've also got an old Earth 2X15 cab but it's only got the one 15 wired up. It's an Eminence Legend (8 ohm, 300 watts).
Both cabs are 8 ohm which should give me a 4 ohm out of the head.

Recently (ish) got back into playin bass in a band and I'm not quite diggin the tone/sound I'm gettin out of it when I crank it up.
It gets a bit flabby. Loses it's oomph and clarity.
I figgers I'm overloading the speakers but not sure.

Pondering replacing the 4X10's in there to see if that's what I need but was wondering what youz guyz thoughts were.

Did I buy a crap head?
Crap cab?
Get rid of the 15 and get another 4X10?
If so, which one?

hmm. i have a low end GK backline 600 head, which is solid state 300 watts. i run it through my Sunn 4x15 monster ass cab, and i LOVE the sound i get. it's so boomy, and i have to turn the bass down on the head to 12:00 because anything more is TOO much bass! what are your EQ settings like? i've learned to become less of a fan of 4x10's, simply because i practice with one at my drummers house (it's a fender 4x10) and it just doesn't do it for me, and the last gig i played at i played an ampeg svt pro through two 4x10's (a backline, and a hartke) and it just lacked all body, it was awful!

I've tweaked EQ on my (active) bass and the head, ran a Vox ToneLab SE in the chain, put a compressor first in the chain, a combo of the Vox and the comp, and it IS a little better but I'm wondering if maybe it's the head I'm not diggin about it.
It's 500 watts so I thought that'd work...and it does....until I open it up.

The guitarist and drummer don't hear what I'm hearing and think it sounds good....???....but the guitar dude's half deaf and the drummer's.....well......

Anyway, I've got a buddy who has another 4X10 cab I can try and another who has another 1X15 cab just for tryin other options.

I dunno...I'm leaning more towards the head itself as bein the culprit but will try the less expensive routes first.

My guess would be a cab issue, but I don't really know what to recommend. I'd suggest a second 4x10, but that's really just a guess. It could also be the cabs your using. Not all 4x10's are created equal, nor are 15's, etc I also suspect that it might have something to do with the fact that you're using a half-empty 2x15 cab that going to have some resonance issues. If it had the other 15, would it be a sealed cab, or is it ported? Either way, the 15 that's there will react differently without the other speaker.

Another thing to consider, if the other guys think it sounds good, is where your standing.

I wondered about the 1 speaker in a 2 speaker cab. The cab itself has a wall separating the two speakers so I thought that would help it act ok as a one speaker cab.
I dunno.

The Champagne taste/ beer budget thang.

I guess I'll be looking into either another 15" for this cab or just get another 2X15 cab.

oh...and the guitar dude has another 4X10 I can try out.

And the band dudes are good guys. But I have a better ear.
