Im putting a recording set up together and i want a high quality proffesional sound...but I was under the impression that it would be more of a recorder/intrsuments thing.I seeall this talk of preamps..compressors..etc.So exactly what kind of gearwould i need..and wat are their functions.I give my music thorough ..patient care.

I will have to tell you the reality: YOU ARE NOT SERIOUS ABOUT RECORDING.

I you were just a bit, you would've searched before asking a question like that.

Forget about recording.

Sorry but I'm really tired of seeing people asking things like that and I'm sure a lot of other people on this board too are. This type of question comes back every other day.

The better your signal chain, the better your end product. It does add up and it DOES make a difference.
You don't have to buy a vintage Neve console and exotic German microphones, although that will be the end result once you start on this journey, a decent mic preamp and a hand full of good mics will go a long way (if you can get by with recording one or two tracks at a time). If you need more symultainious inputs it can start to add up but still very doable.

You're not the only one.

I seeall this talk of preamps..compressors..etc.So exactly what kind of gearwould i need..
What do you want to record? How much money do you have? Do you have a computer? Do you want to go the analogue or the digital way?

and wat are their functions
There's a really cool function at the top-right of the page. It's called 'SEARCH'... Do you know what it means? It is there to help you find informations on things that have ALREADY been answered several times (There's more than 300000 posts on this BBS). There's also a special forum called 'Archives' at the end of the forum listing page (The first page you see when you enter this BBS). A good place to find information too is:

http://www.studiocovers.com/articles.htm

You will find more than you need there.

I give my music thorough ..patient care.
Wish you gave as much patience searching for information...

Beathoven....youre an idiot..
Thanks a lot.

ive searched..
Continue.

You shouldnt speak(type)ignorance..
I'm not the one who's speaking (typing) ignorance here...

youd be taken more seriously
I don't care about being taken seriously by people like you.

Have a nice day.

hey guys take it easy,

Reallusion, Beathoven has a point: be more specific. Just asking 'what equipment do I need' is such a difficult overall question. If you are more specific in what you really need, or give a bit more explanation about your exact goals, we can help you step by step.

But Beathoven, take it easy on the new guy!! This idd a Newbie section. You can point out he has to do some extra search before asking his question, but you don't have to insult him.

This board excists to help eachoter. It is not made to make some petty fights. Now kiss and make up :)!

Reallusion, have you checked here? Lotta stuff that may help with background education -

http://www.studiocovers.com/articles1.htm

Also, keep in mind that answering the same questions 300 times gets really old, and it's sometimes hard to remember that others haven't had that experience yet. It makes things much easier if you study enough to ask more specific questions, otherwise our fingers fall off before we re-write the book on recording 101 for the 1000'th time.

Beathoven, Reallussion - Firstly, since I am likely as old as the two of you put together, I take exception to the term "Idiot", since it borders on copyright infringement (I was there first)
Secondly, everybody has bad days, everybody occasionally misses something obvious when searching for stuff, and most of us at one time or another think everybody is dumber than us/us is dumber than everybody - both scenarios are occasionally right. Generally it's somewhere in between.

Now, let's all play nice :=) or TrackRat'll hafta kill ya... Steve

Like I stated.I had searched..and I have since.......sometimes its not easy to find exactly what youre looking for.in the summary of this section..it says not to be afraid to ask stupid questions here..so maybe one with more experience..and less patience would do better to steer clear of this section..but to all that sincerely tried to help..thanks.Since finding this site..Ive been checking into different pre amps and such..and id be willing to use a computer solely for recording..but i didnt know if i should go that route..or with the portable route ,SO I REASERCHED(stressing that for beathoven so he doesnt have a tizzy). And as far as what i wanted to do..basic recording of vocal tracks..instruments..computer..synth workstation..to eventually put on cd.I was looking at the vs2480,which is between $3000and$4000..to give you an idea of my budget ..so maybe under $7000 total.I dont mean to bring war to the site, which i didnt..i just defended myself..but im very easy to getalong with.and very easy not to.Id rather get along.

The Roland machines, like the VS2480 are great 'all in one machines'. They have premaps, mixer, effects and stuff all buld in in one machine.
If you are tending to a workstation like that, also check out the Akai and the Yamaha versions.

But when you aren't afraid of new techniques and more searching and putting the stuff up yourself, you should consider a good PC with recording software and an outboard mixer. That solution gives you more ability to expand your system as you grow in needs and has also much more possibilities to edit your tracks.

Workstation fans say the comp solution is less stable, but when you use your comp only for recording, and use registerd versions of the software also the PC is a stable machine.

There are tons of possibilities of soundcards and interfaces and mixer. Check stuff like motu and the delta series, and concerning mixers check MAckie, Soundcraft and Allen & Heath

The 2480 is a lot of machine for a newbie AND it dosen't travel well. Also, will you need all of those inputs?

And as far as what i wanted to do..basic recording of vocal tracks..instruments..computer..synth workstation..to eventually put on cd.

Just because you have the budget no need to spend it unwisely. Can you get what you need done with a VS 890 or 1680? and sink more $$$ into mics and other gear (Cables can cost unless you make your own.), I have a friend with a 2480 and he only uses 4 channels consistantly that's a waste of machine and money.

The cost of a 1680 and a good CD R/W will still fall below the price of a 2480.

Lyon ;)

wanted more inputs in case i wanted to mic my kit up and in case of a live recording situation with a full band.Layered vocals too..but itd pobably be better to start with 16 tracks..then see where it went. Thanks to the people that didnt have their fists inserted into their rectums and tried to help.

oh...and an akai 16 track is around 1300..when a complete roland pc setup isaround 700..including mixer..so why not just go 24

very nice little middle school insult there, beathoven. Why didnt you just use"i know you are but what am i"Should you really waste space and time posting a reply that was for nothing but insult?

when i insulted you..it was substantiated..and it was above your level..seeing as one of your best insults was "Sorry, we're not like you here"Funny to see you getso upset by a forum. You get on people cause you conclude they dont search enough?Youre pathetic....i didnt know this site had an official search officer. It would be a great site if not for people like you.

OK kid, read this carefully:

You come here, you ask a question that his answered more than twice a week without providing any info in your post, you insult people that have been here way more longer than you, you double post, you then insult a guy (Wassup DavidK?) who's welcoming you to the forum in a double post? You say you're easy to get along with but what you don't understand is that YOU are the one who should be trying to get along with us...

Youre pathetic....
Thanks a lot. I really like the way you feel about me.

Funny to see you getso upset by a forum.
Looking at the way you write your posts, you look more like the one "who getso upset by a forum".

i didnt know this site had an official search officer.
I'm the one who told you to search more and if I didn't, it would've been another member who would have done so.

It would be a great site if not for people like you.
If you don't like this site, you can go away. No one is obligating you to stay here...

As DavidK said, there's a lot of knowledgeable people here... If you want to get answered the next time you ask a question here, I'd suggest you to be really respectful for a while.

I'm out,
Beathoven

First of all..david k didnt welcome me till he had told me to plug into a tape deck..if you cant recognize that as being short, youre a moron..and yes..i had searched..maybe i typed the wrong keywords...but i didnt get my answers..and iclearly thanked those that sincerely tried to help.. if anyones the kid..its you..you keep repeating the same non sense over and over...and last of all..just because im new in a site..doesnt mean ishould have to get along with you as opposed to you getting along with me..it should be mutual.I dont care how new i am.you wont disrespect me and i just accept it,boy. Now you should really quit wasting space on these pages..for such a devoted member..you dont seem very dedicated to its purpse.
