Fender Twin and Mesa Subway Rocket Clips

(Levels are low, no processing at all, so you'll have to turn it up quite a bit)

I do not make any claims about my ability - or lack thereof - to get great sound with these mics. I only claim that the sound of the Twin, loaded with a Weber Michigan and a Mesa MC90 (Celestion) Black Shadow, in front of my face is the best guitar amp sound I've ever owned. It is much more difficult to get that same sound recorded thru a mic, and I did not achieve what I wanted in that regard. I guess the mic will never "hear" exactly the same way my ears hear. But you can at least hear differences.

My opinion is that the Twin has the great rhythm sound for recording, while the Mesa has the easier to record lead sound. I especially love the Contour channel on the Mesa. But, again, the in my face up close and personal sound is by far a lot better from the Twin on all accounts.

The cab used is a 2x12 closed back loaded with Emi Cannabis Rex. There is one Fathead II ribbon next to the grill on axis, and one Audix i5 next to the grill 90 deg off axis. (I should do the same clips using an RE20!) No fx or eq or compression. The boost is a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive and a Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus used only on the Twin. The Mesa does not play well with those pedals, so none were used on it.

I make no claims about the guitar playing, these are only test clips thrown together quick and dirty. But I would like to make special mention of how surprised I am that all the tube amps I've had give really cool lead sounds thru the cranked up dimed out rhythm/clean channel. I especially like the singing leads I get from the cranked up rhythm channel on the Mesa.

Guitar is a MIA 40th anniv reissue Strat with Fender Hot Noiseless pickups, lite GHS Boomer strings.

The Rhythm only clip alternates first with the Twin rhythm sound, then the Mesa SR rhythm sound, with no leads played. Just so you can hear the difference in the two rhythm sounds. There is a lead only clip that has the ribbon lead in the left channel and the i5 lead in the right channel, alternating, with both blended together at the end. I like the sound of the ribbon quite a bit, but I think the best sound is always achieved by blending two mics. I currently prefer to blend a ribbon with a dynamic.

that mesa sounds amazing. the twin rhythm seems like it would sit really well in a song.

Highlights what I was hearing, also.......that the Mesa is easier to record (or maybe I just cant figure out how to record the Twin) but the Twin sounds waaaaayyyy better in person when I'm standing right in front of the amps.
