Hi all,

I am a total newbie to all this, so any help is gratefully received.

I wish to record real vocals / guitar and have purchased microphones and cables. I will record via a Mackie Mixer (1402-VLZ3). I have iLife '08 (GarageBand) on a MacBook Pro.

I guess I will record through the Mackie, and "out" from the Mackie into the "line-in" of my MacBook Pro. So, it will effectively be taking "two" outputs (L&R) from the Mackie and send down into the Mac via a single cable into the "line-in". So far, so good??? Or have got this totally wrong?

If I assign four inputs into the Mackie (say two Vox and two guitars) - each one on a separate track, how do they all get allocated to a separate track in Garageband when it all seems to go into the MacBook via a single "line-in" cable?

Also, when I record the original tracks, I guess I can listen to what gets laid down via headphones? But what about when I want to listen back to what has been recorded? I will be purchasing some near-field monitor speakers (probably: Yorkville YSM1p), but how do these physically get connected to the MacBook, so that they become my main "listening" speakers? By this I mean; I can only see a small "headphones out" jack on my MacBook, and I am assuming the monitor speakers will not have this kind of plug to fit the hole? Or am I waaaay off here too? Would the speakers have to be plugged into the Mackie - but then how would the recorded GB tracks get fed back into the Mackie etc etc...

I know these are Newbie questions, but I am totally new to this. No experience at all...

Thanks for any reponses that come my way!

Cheers,
Peter

I have the mackie 1202-vlz3 into my delta 1010lt card and this is how i set it up.

I record off of my alt 3-4 input. So i have my alt outputs connected to inputs on my delta. that takes care of what I can record. So I can hear what I have recorded, I connected a couple of outputs on my delta to the stereo 5-6 line in inputs. For the moniters, I used the 1/4 inch inputs from the moniters into the control outputs.

With this setup anything that is going through the alt 3-4 bus will be recorded. On my mackie, I have channel 1-4 for recording. I just put a mic on channel 1, get the gain right, then hit the mute/alt 3-4 bus to get it ready to record. and I hear anything that goes on on my computer through the 5-6 channels.

hope that makes sense and helps, its late....

pgibson2004. If you want to record with setup that you have described for yourself.

You will have to record one (1) track at a time (because you only have one (1) input on your MACBOOKs' soundcard).

Pitseleh, can record multiple sources at once because he/she has a soundcard with multiple inputs and outputs.

Does that make sense? :) If not, i will expound more. ;)

You can connect your monitors to the Mac by using an adapter cable. The OUTPUT on you MAC is FEMALE 1/8" (35mm) STEREO. You will need a cable that is STEREO MALE 1/8" to MONO MALE Left 1/4" and MONO MALE Right 1/4". I think that your monitors accept 1/4 inch male (you will need to check [they might take RCA]}.
