Basic mixing?

I'm not asking for your secret tips, just the basics.

Like, say if I had a track with the drums, a piano and synth hit.

Where the percussion needs to be, where the piano needs to be and where the synth hit needs to be. Just a few tips, thanks.

Hey Participant - fooled ya, it only took me 2 hours to wade thru that!

Sonusman does a better job of relating to newbies than most, for sure. The only book I've seen that comes close is Bobby Owsinski's "Mixing Engineer's Handbook" - probably because Bobby is relatively new compared to some, and likely remembers more of what it was like to be clueless.

Clear back in 1966 I was teaching electronic theory and repair for the US Army Security Agency, and in typical Army fashion I got people from all walks of life, all of whom I was expected to turn into competent Electronics Technicians. From necessity, I found that without common ground there was NO communication. The ways I developed to explain electronic theories made all the difference whether students learned the necessary skills to troubleshoot and repair equipment or not. As Ed pointed out, his writings aren't really SECRET, but the way the vast majority of texts approach it they might just as well have been.

This was the first I'd seen of this thread, thanks for bringing it to the surface again, and thank you Sonusman for bringing a large dose of clarity to the table.

BTW, Participant, got yer window plugged up yet? How? How well? Just curious... Steve

Yea about a month ago. Fiberglass & sheetrock... heavy, but not 400lbs of sand heavy! The room is very quiet at idle... measured under 50db on the SPL meter (yea playing around with my new toy! ) BTW thanks to you, Steve, for the assist on that window plug.

Yeah, that's pretty basic stuff. The only thing I got out of it (6 months ago) was using compression to make lower volume tracks stand out -- but that's just common sense. At $80 for the set of tapes... it may be worth it to someone who's just starting.

BTW Bruce when does that Gibson guy talk about the Almighty?
