Basic Home Recording

My band and I are taking a week or two to record a demo at one of our houses. We probably have 2/3 rooms to play around with. I'll be getting a lend of a digital 8 track of some description, probably renting mics and a bass drum.
My question is...does anyone have suggestions as to the best way to go about it? We'd like to do the basic drum/bass/guitars live if possible. How many / what kind of mics should i get (without breaking the bank)?. Are there any great websites / articles I should read first?
