Basic EQ question....

I'm sampling a drone instrument and would like to bring out the low frequencies a bit or, bring down the highs.I want the sound to "sizzle" but not as much as it is.I suppose I should choose between doing it at the pre-amp(Rane) or later in my wave editor.I guess I'm asking how can I "warm up" the sound a little without over processing?I don't have much experience using pre-amps.

My set-up is pre-amp,to analog tape,to wave editor,to soundfont editor.

Thanks.I'll give it a try.I'm going to try putting the closer mic a little off-axis too.I didn't think of that before.
