hello, all--

my basic problem is lack of computer knowledge. i have a homemade computer--a good one made by a friend. i have windows 2000, cool edit pro, and creative recorder. i'm struggling to teach myself.

this thing's getting slower and slower, and i need to throw some files out. but i've also heard of something called "degenerating"(?), which restacks your mess of files or something, to make your PC faster. can someone tell how this it's done?

also, i got a Creative USB. am i supposed to be plugging my cable into the 1/8" jack in front (marked LINE IN 2, MIC IN 2), one of the color-coded holes in back?

thanks

It is called "Defragmenting".
It is basically what its name implies, reorganizing all the small fragmented data on your hard disk.
It is typically in your program directory under system utilities or accesories.

Don't be alarmed if it takes a couple of hours to do.

I am sure others will chime in to help more.

thank you!

i just got done with the defrag. my friend matt is coming over to help with the other stupid question.

Defrag

That will help, but the best thing you can add to speed things up is more memory. High end digital workstations have at least a gig of ram in them. Go to Circuit City and shell out $50.00 for a 512mb DIMM and you will be amazed at how fast processing will be improved..

Get an anti-spyware program installed in your PC and run it at least once daily. All that spyware and adware floating around the internet will slow down your PC. Same thing happened to my Mom'S PC. I installed and ran the software and cleaned it up now it works fine.

Hey J Dubb.......... you wouldn't happen to be an IBEW Wireman by any chance???

J Dub is slang for Journeyman Wireman.............:)

Anyway, welcome to the board!

That's only if your music computer is connected to the internet.

thanks, evvybuddy--

been in the hospital, so i've fallen behind on the self-teaching thing. i really don't think my computer's weak, so...

what's the best spyware killer? Spyhunter, or something else?

and no, C7th Suspended, i'm not an electrician like my dad (although i blue-gooed and ran enough cables as a kid). my initials are J double-L, and i was raised by wacky people known as JWs.

I'm not convinced that your computer is not "weak"!
What are your specs?

Good to hear that you are not in the hospital anymore... hope you are doing well!
