Barnacle Penis

My band has started playing a bit more rock than pop music. So when I recorded one of our new tracks, I was going for a more raw feel--more open. So we tracked in a huge completely wooden room with high ceilings. I think it came out sounding interesting. It is the first song on my band webpage at www.myspace.com/justthesnare and is called Barnacle Penis. I know the myspace player is kinda crappy quality, but I don't have another site to upload it to right now.

Man, it's tough to critique this through that player so I dropped it to my hard drive and it sounded infinitely better through media player.

I liked the tune...very cool lyrics...reminds me just a bit of They Might Be Giants.

Mixwise: Well, you got raw alright, but you traded a ton of definition to get there. I think you could strike a balance with a little massaging here and there starting with the drum tracks. Maybe bump the high end just a hair on the toms...say 3-5 db at around 4k to help put a little definition on those tom attacks. Very important for that quiet area @ 2:00 or so into the piece and it doesn't destroy the raw sound you're going for.
You might consider a similar bump on the snare for much the same reasons.

Vox sound great...well tracked and clear and understandable.
Guits get a little brittle now and then, but the rhythm is very solidly mixed.

I think this was a pretty good first pass at the mix, but I'd tweak it a little.

Maybe TMBGiants via barenaked ladies?
I like everything except the guitar sound.
TeyshaBlue was spot on with most comments.
Guitar wise the rhythm is all mids & not much else. Could you EQ in some range topward?
The solo is interesting - it's beginning is a big change from the chorus. I'd actually like to hear it carried through interms of a filigre for the rest of the song. The rhythm guitars need that top end.

Good job pdadda. You captured the raw sound, and defined it well. It's almost like listening to this from up in the rafters. The barnacle penis?..ouch!
