I am trying to figure out how to make a dog barking sound pitched so that I can simulate a dog barking a melody. Any suggestions?

What are you using to track?

I use CubaseVST and could probably acheive that by using one of the voicegenerating plug in's. It would generate a tonish sound <note> and you could mix/blend it with the bark and would sound more like a note. That would be my first guess. :)

Another idea would be to change the pitch of the bark in Sound Forge or equal wav prog. It would sound less barkish and more melodic the farther away from the original you went.

i think vspaceboy may have been confusing...we don't know how much recording experience u have....... i'm going to act like u have none since you didn't say.....i don't mean to be offensive.

basically you need some recording program....the ones at your local hastings, circuit city, or best buy type store should work just fine for it. all you need is a program that has a pitch shift in it.....i believe all recording software, even the really cheap stuff has pitchshift.

anyway......you would just take ur recorded bark and pitch shift it. to make a melody of it, you would need to make copies of the park......also something every recording program can do. pitch shift each bark to the note you want and then arrange them.

if it's a short repeating melody, you could arrange them, then copy what you have arranged and paste paste it so you don't have to spend quite as much time arranging them.

I'll go one step easier...

1) Follow your dog around with a mic and record his barks. If he doesn't bark, don't kick him - that would be just plain mean :)

2) Borrow a sampling keyboard or use a VST plugin to generate the bark/notes.

Most dog barks don't vary much in pitch, so it shouldn't be that difficult to get a good take (bark) to work with.

The Prophet-5 came with a pretty good bark sound - there was a pitch element to it. If you've got a Pro-5/52/53 VSTi (doesn't everyone?;) ), it should be repeatable.

I tried to teach my kids synthesis - they never got past staging the dog/cat/birdfight though:(

Why would someone eith the name "Donkeystyle" presume that I have no experience becuase I did not say I do not mean to offend. First, what could possibly offensive about this question. Second, you are quite wrong, I have quite a bit of experience but I was just wondering if anyone had ever thought up a novle approach to this type of problem. Third, I sampled the dog barking and it was fine. I also recorded the dog into Digital Performer and tonight I will decide which of the two will suit my needs best. I am hoping to map the dog bark to the keyboard and get some melodic barking going.

So, anyway, thanks for the tips. The funny part of the whole thing was that the client who needed this sound brought his dog to the studio. To get the dog to bark all we had to do was knock on the door and the dog barked. However, when we played the dogs barking back, the dog went nuts. After that, I caught the dog staring at itself in the mirror. One session and already the dog thinks its a star. Go figure.

I think donkeystyle meant no offense to you by assuming that you were a beginner, only for the purpose of providing an explaination. Many of us do that - better to over-explain than under-explain. And, by confusing, I think he was referring to VSpaceBoy's post rather than your initial question. Obviously you're not a beginner - I woudn't think any disrespect was intended.

Anyway, glad to hear the animals cooperated. I stare at myself in the mirror sometimes too, but then I start crying and it's all over :)

sean is correct........both about vspaceboys post and about how i meant that i didn't mean to be offensive. i guess i could have worded the "i don't mean to be offensive" in a better way.

i don't know if you were pointing out my laughable nick or not, but if you were i'm gonna let you in on a little secret..........it's supposed to be laughable. it was a joke between some friends......for a while everything was described as donkey something.......... donkeyballs out rock n'roll for instance. donkeystyle became a joke rap song that my friends and i did. i'll post the link to it if anyones interested.
