mixmkr

we don't need rest!!
decided to start a new thread......

well...since you guys didn't ream me a new one, and actually
gave me some confidence, I went back, rerecored the banjo, tried to clean up the mix a bit, added some other stuff, etc.

I mic'd the banjo a little closer this time, and double tracked it...which may be a villian in itself...but we'll see.

I am kinda lost where go with this, not sure if it qualifies as an instrumental, and seems too busy for vocals... so I could use some ideas in that department.

Btw...how is the banjo (sonically) starting to sound? Was dbl. tracking a bad idea?

any other musical ideas for this?...or of course any other comments?

0h.... and I want thank Scotttansley for the listen (yeah..a 57 would probably do it)..

Scottboyer.. hopefully this mix is better..

Slucie... Fleck is TOO awesome...

AIA2... floyd, huh?

thanks for the listen, guys.. hopefully this mix is an improvement

The banjo needs heavy gain distortion and Sam's whammy effects and guitar processors. Other than that, sounds terrific. :)

If you were closer I'd like to hear what my pair of Octava's would sound like on that banjo. Just curious. I love that guitar stuff around 2:00! Very oceanic. I love finding words for music...don't you?

SluCie yeah..I should probably experiment with some stereo mic'ing. The sound DRASTICALLY changes if I move the mic much. I actually used a dynamic on this (re20)...and I am not sure why... It was just on the stand. I had the mic about a foot away pointing right at the end of the fingerboard. That seemed to give it its fullest sound. I found the volume of the thing really changes a lot too...much more than an acoustic gtr.

thx for the feedback.. whammy and rat coming next!

Ok... This has nothing to do with anyone's nuts... but here goes :o

Reverb on the banjo (itself) to me sounds like it's reflecting too early right there in the beginning... or the doubling is out of sync... either that or it's ... a clam?? (just the one time... it's fine after that)

Nice progress on the fingerpicking... new notes in there... sweet... cool gtr leads too...

I'm liking the low piano (o... scuse me "PNO" ) part there.... then the "sweep"... banjo comes back... some small timing still...

16th note shakers there left-right-left-right... subtle, but cute.

Tympani... Pretty epic...

i'll give you 5 grand for the melody

As mixmkr's attorney, could I ...just...could I just see the money? Do you...have it with you?

I don't think i've ever heard a banjo inserted into that kind of context. Seriously it's like you made the lost "Satriani banjo cut"

I like the way it turned out, aaaaahmuh goan get me one o dem banjoez! hhhooodddaddi!

chad...yes...clam free is still a challenge. I hear what you are talking about. maybe I can 'cheat' and nudge it a bit in my computer!!;)
...and ya know...the abbreviations... gtr, pno, hh... all come from the scribble strips and track sheets of days long gone... ..and I still like writing them...eh?

SluiCe... could KingstonRock be making a joke..?. SOLD!!! <--- no joke there:eek:

Khompewtur...is that like the Russian spelling for my PC?;)
appreciate what I take as very kind remarks... thanks..

~Lt. Bob~ (from the old thread). glad you made it around for a listen. I always am eager for those with the "experienced" ears to have a listen, and feel I did HALF OK that a man of your knowledge and abilities didn't just laugh me off the boards...
Thanks, buttplug. I really mean it!! (the thanks that is...not the name!;) )

Wow, sounds much better than the first version I heard. I definitely hear the Bela Fleck influence here. I keep waiting for Howard Levy's harmonica to come soaring in.

The banjo kind of sounds like it was recorded in a different room from the rest of the stuff, but I like that, so don't change it:). It kinda keeps the sound from being too "smooth".

I could definitely hear some vox over this. Maybe that chick from "Til Tuesday" - whatsername....

Oh yeah, Aimee Mann. Very 80s that would be.

Nice.

Chris

Okay, I'm making stuff up without reading...but I saw that Chad posted, so just do whatever he said.

Just at the very beginning, the doubled banjo seems kinda' "loose," but after the first :10 seconds, it's cool.

I never thought I'd type this on this BBS, but here goes: I'd actually like to hear the banjo a little louder in parts It does kinda' get swallowed in some places, but maybe it's not supposed to be in the lead position 100% of the time...I just found my deaf self straining a bit to hear it.

Having said that, I'll qualify it with (1) Yes, I think vocals would work with this; and (2) If vocals happen, the level of the banjo is perfect.

I really liked the guitar lines, by the way.

I found myself humming a vocal melody over this kinda' compulsively, but I won't ask, lol.

ok...went in and cheated and nudged the notes in the computer. Yeah..the notes stuck out big time being able to "SEE" it on the screen. Dang...can't "slide" into a part for shit around here!!!

thanks for the catch, guys...

(but I'm too lazy to remix and repost just for that:( )..needs more changes which we'll see.. hhhmmm maybe some accordian too!!

so... shuffle, shuffle... head looking to the ground...shuffle, shuffle

you got a melody line Harris??
(you don't have to answer!!;) )

damn...where's Dan...I wus hopin' you'd hit this one....

that made me laugh!

I like the additions.. was that an EBow around 2?

It does still sound unfinished, especially after the 2:35 mark.. if not vocals, more solos.. I would even have another melody over the banjo part.. I wasnt crazy about the timpani drums.. didnt seem kosher there but maybe it was just filling in a gap.. almost sounds like thunder.. the sound is good though!

I hit this last night...I liked it, I liked it a lot. My future son-n-law is giving me a banjo, we may have to cut heads sometime!

NOT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>:D

I liked it mix.

mixxy, you been practicing ain't cha, well, ain't cha. This is absolutely the bomb-o-matic. It's kinda a reverse roll, and it fits in so nice with the track. Fuck a bunch of Scruggs' picking. Makes me want to get out the keys, the strat, effects, and lay some banjo in. Super.

Dan

Nice tune, like the pattern on the banjo. Electrics that kick in around :50 are nice to, reminded me of YES for a second. It sounds like you are struggling a bit on that banjo part. I didn't hear the first one but the double tracking works.

Good stuff.

YEA BABY !

I fucking love BANGO !!!!!!!!

Great mix !!!!!

Yay banjo! I remember I posted up a song with banjo a while back and you said you wanted to get one-followed it to the guitar forum as you searched for one, and here is the final product! Very cool-first off nice slick drum machine synth bed-almost an oriental flavor--(which the banjo can definetely do). Excellent part you came up with there nice aperggios-though the double tracking isnt exact and timing is a little off right in the beginning (kind of a confused feel there for a sec)-its a very cool part. Recording and mix sounds very good-maybe a bit more twang on the banjo?? Just a personal pref thing perhaps. Nice.
