this band was called emerson and we recorded this song during the summer. a band member moved (less than a week ago) and he was best friends with the lead singer/rhythm guitarist and the lead singer just didn't want to do the band thing anymore once he moved. BUT i still really like this song. it was a song that went through many versions and we never got to play this recorded version for anybody. live that is. i really just want to put it up here so someone listens to it. it seems like a waste now.

The song is called Tonight Tonight: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=906831

Mix sounds okay to me. I think this has a very modern vibe to it - very "now" feeling. Reminds me of the stuff I hear on the radio.... Cool

Ok. I'll validate your existence. :D

This does sound pretty good. I like the driving drum parts. The song is very radio-friendly.

Though I am a little dissappointed that this isn't a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight Tonight". :( :D

Love it! What a shame the band isn't together anymore and this song won't be in everyone's homes. Great sound, great vocals, great music, great everything.

I say get the rights to it, find a new band, and shop it. Awesome!

thanks! i'll show these comments to the lead singer maybe he'll stop being so depressed ;)

Mix is a little dry and thin, but all the material is there to work with ... just needs some TLC ... but there's so much to do, it's too much to cover in BBS format.

Mostly it's a levels/panning/compression issue ... but everything has been tracked very well.

I'd stay at it ... it's a good tune.

yeah i'm still learning the art of eqing and compression. kev could you be more specific in what needs to be changed in your opinion.

Start w/ the basics G ... build this one from the ground up ... the levels are varying all over the place ... there needs to be more consistency.

Lock the kick/bass first, then add the rest of the drums. What I'd do w/ the kick is take a transient plug ... like this one: Transient Monster and work w/ it until you get the sound you want. Use the same plug on the snare ... transient plugs do amazing things to percussive sounds (inc piano). I use the one they issue w/ Sonar 8 all the time.

Anyways ... send the drum submix to a mastering bus w/ a limiter strapped across it. Apply the limiter to suit ... attempt to glue the kit, whilst allowing it to remain "snappy" ... and FULL ... careful not to equate loudness w/ flatness.

Once you've got that down ... then fold in the vocals on top of the percussion frame ... also compress the vocal so that you've got a nice even presentation that doesn't rise or fall too much under the music bed.

THEN once the two critical elements are in place, start to add the trimmings ... like guitars, keys, pads etc ... panning in such a fashion to not interfere w/ what you've set up ... keep the vocals and drums somewhat sacrosanct.

Don't try too hard to fit everything in ... just try to discern what has to be there and what isn't as important ... and mix accordingly. Mixing is all about decision making.

Once you've got all the element in place, then start to layer in the effects ... being careful to put everything in the same "space" ... and more careful not to get too washy with them.

Hope this helps!

totally helps! i don't think i have the money right now to get that equipment that you were talking about, but i'll definately keep it in mind when i start doing some serious recording. thanks.

Just be careful with compression - use it if you can't automate the faders or get an even performance.
This song is good & the elements are there.
You might consider, in the short term, centering all the panning and constructing your mix from a mono base - not for the final product - just until you have all the EQing & levels sorted. If it sounds awful in mono it's because of sound clashes that'll need sorting out with some EQ carving. After that you can pan out from centre to create a good stereo image.
